St. Marys senior baseball stars fall to DuBois 13-4

DuBois put together a nine-run fifth inning on Friday evening to force a final face-off with the St. Marys Little League baseball senior league squad to decide the District 10 title. St. Marys had taken an early lead in the game and, prior to that inning, the game was tied at 4-all.

St. Marys Legion defeats Port Allegany 12-2 in six innings

The St. Marys Legion baseball team stayed alive in the Elk County Legion League playoffs with a 12-2 win in six innings over the Port Allegany squad Friday night at Berwind Park.
St. Marys will now travel to Johnsonburg Sunday for a 5:30 p.m. game with the Wilcox Legion. Fox Township defeated Wilcox by a 1-0 score last night.

Minor softball stars drop title game to Punxsy 10-0 in five innings

The St. Marys Little League softball minor league all star squad lost 10-0 to Punxsutawney in five innings on Thursday evening at Benzinger Park in the District 10 championship game.

Geraldine P. Young

Geraldine P. Young, 83, a resident of Ridgmont Assisted Living Facility in Ridgway, and formerly of 1168 Windfall Rd., St. Marys, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Ridgmont.
She was born October 3, 1929 in Huntington, W Va., daughter of the late Percival “Red” and Alice Mooring Powell.
She was a graduate of Huntington High School, Class of 1947, and attended Marshall University and Cedarville College. She had been a resident of the area since 1966.
In 1958, in Huntington, W Va,. she married Richard L. Young, who survives.

Ethel Prout

Ethel Prout, 92, died on June 26, 2013 at her brother-in-law Jack’s home outside Buffalo, N.Y.
She was born in Jamestown, N.Y. on March 18, 1921, daughter of the late Harry and Leora Stewart.
When she was a young girl, her family moved to Buffalo, N.Y. She met her husband-to-be, Dick, in church. They married while he was in pilot training during WWII. After the war they continued to live in Buffalo until job opportunities took the family to Lima, Ohio and then to St. Marys. They lived in St. Marys for nearly 40 years.

Rainy weather brings rainbow sightings

"If there be a rainbow in the eve, it will rain and leave; but if there be a rainbow in the morrow It will neither lend nor borrow."
One positive result of the recent rainy weather has been the sighting of numerous rainbows.
The optical and meteorological phenomenas are caused by the reflection of light in water droplets resulting in a multicolor spectrum of light. One of the most picturesque spectacles in nature, rainbows have inspired countless legends, songs and fairy tales.

Use of facilities agreement in question in Fox Twp.

The Fox Township Supervisors plan to re-visit their use of facilities agreements for the township's Community Park and Community Building.
A response was recently received from township solicitor David Pontzer regarding the agreement forms. Pontzer was not in attendance at the meeting due to a scheduling conflict.

RASD names Berkheimer as school tax collector

RIDGWAY – Berkheimer Tax Services, the company appointed to replace fallen earned income tax collection giant CENTAX in Elk County is now also heading up collection of school taxes for the Ridgway Area School District (RASD).

Over 300 youth turn out for Inner Park Day at Memorial Park

Wednesday may have dawned overcast and rainy, but the Memorial Park staff decided to stick with their plans for Inner Park Day, and by the time signups were nearly complete the rain had stopped and the sun had begun to poke through the clouds. It may not have been the 75 degrees and sunshine that park staff had hoped for, but the rain stayed away for the rest of the event and a record turnout of around 320 youngsters between the ages of 5-14 showed up to spend an enjoyable day at the park.

New business items approved by supervisors

FOX TWP. – The Fox Township Supervisors unanimously approved several new business items at their Wednesday evening meeting, among them being a wetland mitigation permit, a request for use of equipment during the Elk County Fair and replacement of equipment.
