The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team evened their record at 1-1 on the young season with a 39-19 victory over the Keystone Panthers Friday night at Knox.

The Elk County Catholic Crusader football team was unable to fend off a Sheffield rally on Friday night in their home opener, giving up a slim 9-7 halftime lead to fall to the Wolverines 27-16 at Dutch Country Stadium.

Lady Crusader volleyball downs Lady Dutch 3-0

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team evened their record on the young season at 1-1 with a 3-0 victory over the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch Thursday night at the ECCHS gym. St. Marys is also now 1-1 on the year.

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team improved to 5-2 on their season with an 8-1 victory over a shorthanded Brockway squad played under sunny skies at Benzinger Park on Thursday afternoon.

ECCF surpasses $2 million in grant awards

The Elk County Community Foundation (ECCF) celebrated yet another major milestone in surpassing the $2 million mark in total dollars awarded to community agencies, municipalities and groups.
During the foundation's 10th anniversary in 2010, they granted their first million dollars.
"We are so excited that it only took three more years to hit this next milestone," said Paula Fritz-Eddy, executive director.

The west in need of eastern crew

To date nearly 100 crews have traveled to the west in support of the fire community currently battling the summer wildfires.
On Aug. 12, five crew left Harrisburg to preposition in Salt Lake City.

Shirley H. Fitzgerald

Shirley H. Fitzgerald, 84, of 238 Parkview Rd, St. Marys, died Friday morning, Sept. 6, 2013, at her home following a lengthy illness.
She was born March 19, 1929 in Bradford, daughter of the late Kenneth and Mabell Iddings Hokanson. She was a graduate of Bradford High School, Class of 1947 and had been a resident of St. Marys since 1951.
On November 24, 1949 in Bradford, she married William K. Fitzgerald, who survives.

Man with Kane connection seeks world record

Kurt Steiner’s right arm may be a little sore today.
But the pain will be well worth it if he regains a Guinness world record for skipping stones.
Steiner tried to establish the record Friday by skipping smooth Lake Erie beach stones on the Allegheny Reservoir near the mouth of Kinzua Creek at Red Bridge.
