September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the St. Marys Public Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that our students have the most import school supply of all â€“ a free library card.Â
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch golf team recorded their first dual match win of the season Wednesday when they edged the Bradford Owls 216-218 at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course.
The St. Marys Area Dutch soccer team hosted the Ridgway Elkers on Wednesday evening at Angela Huey Memorial Field in Fox Township instead of at the SMAHS soccer field, but the change of venue seemed to have little impact on Dutchmen as they rolled to their first win of the season, avenging an earlier loss to Ridgway with a 3-1 victory.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch suffered their first loss of the season in a 7-0 defeat to the Ridgway Lady Elkers at the SMAHS soccer field.
Stephen Augustine Mishenko, 80, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013 at 7 p.m. at the Snyder Memorial Nursing Home, Marienville.â€¨He was born Sept. 22, 1932 at Clarion Avenue in the Vennard Island area of Johnsonburg. He was the son of the late Stephen J. and Anna (Kasaback/Kasubjak) Mishenko of Johnsonburg. He was a resident of Johnsonburg all his life.
He attended Holy Rosary School, West End School and the Johnsonburg High School.
Cecelia A. Haser, 76, 159 Queens Rd., St. Marys, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at her home.
She was born Dec. 18, 1936 in St. Marys, daughter of the late James and Assunta Scarnati Carino. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1956.
On May 30, 1960 in the Queen of the World Church, she married Raymond J. Haser, who preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 2001.
RIDGWAY â€“ The Footlighters will be performing "Wait Until Dark," a play by Frederick Knott on Sept. 19-21. The production will be a dinner theatre with doors opening at 5 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the play to start at 7 p.m.
Real estate taxes of over half a million dollars will be turned over to Elk County for collection per a motion approved by the St. Marys Area School District's board of directors.
The Elk County Catholic girls' tennis team defeated the Lady Dutch 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon in a match played at the SMAHS tennis courts.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 3-0 victory over the Sheffield Lady Wolverines Tuesday night in a very warm SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Dutch won the first set 25-14, took the second set 25-19 and won the third set 25-15 to win the match.
