Lady Dutch tennis defeats Punxsy 8-1

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch tennis team fought through wind and occasional drizzle on Tuesday afternoon to earn an 8-1 victory over the visiting Punxsutawney Lady Chucks in a match played at the SMAHS tennis courts.

St. Marys Area cross country squads swept by Bradford

The St. Marys Area boys' and girls' cross country teams were both handed minor setbacks on Tuesday afternoon as they hosted Bradford in a dual meet at the St. Marys Area High School. The Owls defeated the Dutchmen 26-31 and the Lady Owls beat the Lady Dutch 22-35.

Crusader cross country squad falls to Kane 23-32

The Elk County Catholic Crusader cross country squad opened their dual meet season with a 23-32 loss to the visiting Kane Wolves on Tuesday afternoon at Benzinger Park. The Lady Crusaders ran unopposed as Kane did not have enough runners to field a team.

Delores M. Smithbauer

September 3, 2013

Delores M. Smithbauer, 98, of Pinecrest Manor, and formerly of 227 John St., St. Marys, died at Pinecrest Manor on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 following a lengthy illness.
She was born Oct. 27, 1914 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Wilfred and Clara Young Neubert.
On April 4, 1964 in St. Mary's Church, she married the late Marvin "Mike" Smithbauer, who preceded her in death on Aug. 24, 2011.

Alfred J. "Pete" Manners

Alfred J. "Pete" Manners, 94, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of Benezette, died on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 following a lengthy illness.
He was born Oct. 28, 1918 in Punxsutawney, a son of the late William and Jessie Manners.
On May 19, 1948 in Punxsutawney, he married Ann Swanson Manners, who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during WWII in Normandy and France. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received during the war.

Edward L. Joshnick

Edward L. Joshnick, 50, of 395 S. St. Marys St., St. Marys, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center following a vehicle-pedestrian accident in Fox Township.
He was born March 23, 1963 in Newark, N.J., a son of the late Lawrence and Barbara Applinski Joshnick.
He was a graduate of SMAHS, Class of 1982 and was Catholic by faith. He was employed by Custom Industrial Processing and had also worked at Metco for several years. He enjoyed running, swimming, and going to camp.

St. Marys woman dies from rifle wound

ST. MARYS – A 48-year-old woman is dead after reportedly being gunned down early Tuesday morning at Eastern Sintered Alloys in St. Marys.
According to an affidavit of probable case filed in the case, Michael J. Stephanic Jr., age 44, faces multiple charges including criminal homicide, two felony counts of aggravated assault and a felony charge of discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure.

Scolari pleads to arson charge

RIDGWAY – Michael Anthony Scolari, age 25, pleaded guilty to one felony count of arson as part of a plea bargain with the District Attorney's office stemming from a July 9, 2012 camper fire that occurred at his residence.

Howard Hanna Real Estate opens office in St. Marys

Howard Hanna Real Estate Services and North Star Realty Group of St. Marys recently celebrated their new affiliation during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at their office located at 20 N. Michael St. on the Diamond in downtown St. Marys.
Members of both companies were on hand along with representatives from the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of St. Marys.

St. Marys man dies after being struck by SUV

FOX TWP. – A 50-year-old St. Marys man died late Monday night after being hit by an SUV on state Route 255, according to police reports.
Edward Joshnik reported walked onto SR 255 near Laurel Run Road shortly after 11 p.m. Monday and was struck by a Ford Escape.
He was later pronounced dead at Elk Regional Health center.
Police said the driver of the SUV will not be charged.
