King reminds athletes of the importance of teamwork

FOX TWP. – In the midst of all the excitement surrounding this year’s EQT Energy Classic Elk County Holiday Tournament, Root Sports anchor Rob King reminded the athletes participating in this year’s event that every member of a team contributes in some way to that team’s success.

Daniel E. "Squeaky" Miller Sr.

Daniel E. "Squeaky" Miller Sr., 64, a resident of Highland View Health Care in Brockway, died peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013 following a brief illness.
He was born May 18, 1949 in Ridgway, a son of the late Lawrence and Sophie Flacinski Miller.
Mr. Miller lived most of his life in Elk County, with the Miller homestead being located in Wilcox. He worked for several years at Motion Control in Ridgway and at St. Marys Pressed Metals. He enjoyed hunting, working, remodeling houses and working on cars. He also had a great love for dogs and eagles.

John J. Boschert

John J. Boschert, 54, of 424 German Settlement Rd., Ridgway, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013.
He was born April 11, 1959 in St. Marys, a son of Anna Carlson Boschert of St. Marys and the late John J. Boschert, who preceded him in death on March 29, 2013.
On Sept. 24, 2004 in Ridgway, he married Jane Woelfel Boschert, who survives.

Crusaders down Dutchmen 70-41 to reach county finals

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders will meet the Johnsonburg Rams tonight at 8 p.m. at St. Marys Area High School in the championship game of the county championship game of the EQT Energy Classic Elk County Holiday Tournament.
The Crusaders were able to use a strong first half to defeat the Dutch. Elk led 21-13 after the first period and 44-20 at the half. The Crusaders outscored St. Marys 26-21 in the second half to record the win.

Lady Crusaders edge Lady Dutch 45-43 in EQT opener

The EQT Energy Classic Elk County Holiday Tournament got underway with an exciting matchup between the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch and Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders at 3 p.m. on Thursday afternoon at the SMAHS Dutch Oven. Though the Lady Dutch led most of the way, the Lady Crusaders were able to battle back at the end and rally for a 45-43 victory. Elk Catholic meets Johnsonburg tonight at 6:30 p.m. for the county title.

Students learn about national issue, debate tactics

The Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to by many as Obamacare, is a highly debated topic across the nation. Various groups support the measure and the increase in health care opportunities it provides, while countless others oppose it and continue to fight for its repeal.
While the battle over Obamacare continues to play out on the national stage, it was also the basis for a literal debate recently at Elk County Catholic High School.

John H. Smith, 66, of 16959 Jerusalem Corners Rd., Pleasantville, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013.
He was born on Oct. 10, 1947 to the late Hilary and Bernenice Wyant Smith in Ridgway.
He was a graduate of Elk County Christian High School, Class of 1965. He attended Gannon University where he graduated with a B.S. in accounting.
He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in Germany during the Vietnam War.
He moved to Pleasantville in 1971 where he worked for GTE/Sylvania in Titusville and Warren for 10 years.

William "Bill" Shaner

William "Bill" Shaner, 77, of River Road, Weedville, died on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013 at DRMC after a yearlong illness.
He was born June 16, 1936 in Altoona, son of the late Charles and Thelma (Barnett) Shaner.
On Aug. 2, 1975 he married Pennie (Rosenhoover) and she survives.

David J. Gustafson

David J. Gustafson, 61, of Mountain Laurel Nursing Home in Clearfield died on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013 following a lengthy illness.
He was born Jan. 5, 1952 in Ridgway, son of the late Tom and Nellie (O'Brien) Gustafson.
He grew up on Bailey's Settlement in Clearfield and graduated from Curwensville High School.
He resided most of his life in Ridgway. Dave was a Christian who spent many years involved in the Cornerstone Church of Ridgway. He served in the U.S. Air Force and over the years was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and Sons of Italy.
