RIDGWAY â€“ According to officials with the Western Pennsylvania Division of the Salvation Army, the division's Red Christmas Kettle Campaign is trailing behind 2012 figures by more than $307,000.
Lieutenant Esther E. Wilson, Corps Officer at the Salvation Army in Ridgway said Wednesday afternoon that collections have been down for Elk County as well as volunteers to stand at the kettles.
Fox Township Supervisors voted to terminate an agreement between the township and the operator of the Toby Water Treatment Plant effective Jan. 6, 2014.
The move stems from a request submitted by the operator in seeking additional funding for the position.
Supervisor Mike Keller stated that in reviewing the existing agreement he suggested assigning the current operator duties to Rob Singer, township code enforcement officer and certified plant operator.
Problems have been reported about driveway pipes causing issues for other property owners along Badeau Road in Fox Township.
In July the road was flooded in which residents thought it stemmed from a clogged township ditch. While the ditch is owned by the township, the road crew discovered there are two small pipes installed inside the ditch which were clogged with leaves and other debris. The material gathered from the property owner who resides above the ditch.
Upon investigation a permit could not be located for the installation of the pipes.
Wallace J. "Rocky" Smith, 76, of 134 Penn Rd., St. Marys, died on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
He was born February 17, 1937 in St. Marys, a son of the late Elwood and Margaret Engert Smith.
On May 21, 1960 in St. Boniface Church, he married Diana Carrara Smith, who survives.
In anticipation of the EQT Energy Classic Elk County Holiday Tournament, which will be held on Dec. 26, 27, and 28 at both SMAHS and ECCHS, all eight participating schools recently had the opportunity to take part in a 'Lucky Lip' Sync Video Contest that encouraged them to make a two to two and a half minute video presentation showcasing what school spirit meant to them.
Representatives from the Elk County Humane Society (ECHS) requested the organization be included in the city's budget to the tune of $2,000 to help subsidize the cost of starting a low cost spay and neuter clinic to address the overpopulation of stray and feral cats in the area.
Joe Boylan, Humane Society president was joined by Elk County Humane Officer Karen Cappiello who explained the organization's request stating they have space allotted for the medical room at the shelter but are in need of funds for equipment, supplies and veterinarian costs.
Heavy smoke and sparks greeted firefighters Tuesday when the Kane Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire call at Kane Hardwood.
Fire Chief Tim Holt said the fire was confined to a dust collection silo in a shipping area at the plant off Route 6 in Wetmore Township west of Kane.
Mary Ann (Parana) Kreckel, 94, of 1044 Windfall Rd., died at the family homestead on Monday afternoon, Dec. 2, 2013.
She was born on Jan. 17, 1919 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Gluck Parana.
On Sept. 4, 1944 in Holy Rosary Church, she married Lavern Kreckel Sr., who preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 1965.
Ruth "Tootsie" Nero, 78, of 1598 Rosely Rd., St. Marys, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013 at UPMC Hamot Hospital in Erie following a brief illness.Â
She was born on April 28, 1935 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late John A. and Gertrude A. Wendel Dippold.Â
