SMAMS students visit Wallops Island

St. Marys Area Middle School advanced science students and their teachers traveled to Wallops Island, Va. to learn about four different coastal environments and what connects each environment to surrounding habitats. These students had the unique opportunity to get a hands-on, feet-wet environmental experience.

George P. "Kayo" Hetrick

April 1, 2013

George P. "Kayo" Hetrick, 84, of 143 Houston Rd., St. Marys, died Monday, April 1, 2013 at the DuBois Nursing Home after a brief illness.
He was born August 12, 1928, in Byrnedale, son of the late George and Kathryn McDaniel Hetrick. On November 8, 1952, in the St. Mary's Church, he married Arlene C. Reider, who survives.

Sheri R. Greak

Sheri R. Greak, 66, of 815 Middletown Rd., Lake City, died Monday, April 1, 2013 at Ridgmont Assisted Living Facility after a lengthy illness.
She was born June 6, 1946, in McKeesport, the daughter of the late Arthur B. and Ethel R. Snyder.
She married Leonard G. Greak (PSP) , and he predeceased her in death on April 29, 2003.
She graduated from Holy Ghost Academy, Mercy Hospital (Pittsburgh), and Hananaham (Philadelphia) with a degree in Nursing.

Youth portray lax attitudes towards drug and alcohol use in area

In a recent town hall meeting dealing with drug use and local youth, a survey of area adolescents and teens showed many believe this area holds lax views on drugs and alcohol use.

SMAMS Day of Giving benefits multiple organizations

St. Marys Area Middle School held a Day of Giving recently where they distributed just over $1,800 to two organizations fighting leukemia and multiple sclerosis as well as donated bags of candy bar wrappers to help feed America's hungry.

Bunny Hop becoming an Easter tradition for many

When the Frank and Paladino siblings decided to hold a 5k walk/run on the day before Easter three years ago, they simply wanted to honor the memories of their mothers, who had both died from brain aneurysms, and raise funds for The Brain Aneurysm Foundation. They did not realize at the time that they were also starting an event that would become a tradition for a number of area residents.

David L. Mahoney

David L. Mahoney, 46, of 41 West Cardott St., Ridgway, died Saturday morning at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 9, 1966 in Ridgway, son of J. Leo and Betty A. (Pavlock) Mahoney.
He married Wendy S. Gardner on August 21, 1993, and she survives.
He had resided in Ridgway for the last 20 years and was a former Johnsonburg resident. He was a member of the Hallton Church. He was a 1986 graduate of the Johnsonburg High School. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, the Steelers, and vacations to the Outer Banks.

Edith T. Agosti

Edith T. Agosti, 94, of Bennetts Valley Highway, Weedville, died Friday, March 29, 2013 at the Sarah Reed Retirement Center in Erie.
She was born August 15, 1918 in Byrnedale, daughter of the late Andrew and Maddelena (Picchetti) Panighetti.
In February 1943 she married Sylvester Agosti and he preceded her in death on March 26, 1980.
Mrs.Agosti lived all her life in Bennetts Valley and was a member of St. Joseph Church. She worked at Airco Speer for many years. She loved traveling and her family.

Police: Bath salts growing problem in area

MARYS - "Methylenedioxypyrovalerone is here," said St. Marys City Police Officer Greg McManus in speaking before a group of concerned parents and local law enforcement about the rise of stimulant bath salts use in the area at a town hall meeting held at the South St. Marys Street earlier this week.
