PGC: Deer in Blair, Bedford counties should be safe to consume

Speaking at a press conference at the Pennsylvania Game Commission's Harrisburg headquarters on Monday afternoon regarding the discovery of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in samples collected from three hunter-harvested deer from Blair and Bedford counties, PGC officials indicated there is not believed to be any danger to individuals who consume meat from other deer harvested in those areas, even if the animal had not been tested for CWD.

Surveillance efforts to monitor for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) cost the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) and Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) hundreds of thousands of dollars last year, and expenses will likely continue to increase now that the disease has been detected in a small portion of the state's free-ranging deer herd.

John R. Gerg, 74, formerly of 408 Center St., St. Marys, and a resident of New Port Richey, Fla., since 2006, died unexpectedly on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013 at his home.
He was born April 24, 1938 in St. Marys, the only child of the late John G. and Rita J. Golden Gerg.
John was an employee of Stackpole Carbon and then Sylvania, from which he retired. He served as a private in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1959.

Wayne A. Wickett

Wayne A. Wickett, 57, of 478 Brusselles St., St. Marys, died on Monday, March 4, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 8, 1956 in St. Marys, a son of the late Herbert and Helen Parana Wickett.
On May 15, 1981 in St. Mary's Church, he married Patricia Beaver Wickett, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of SMAHS, Class of 1974. He worked at Metaldyne for many years and also owned and operated his own business, Wickett's Machining. He enjoyed watching sports, cooking and making wine.

Woman sentenced for theft of $20K from Walmart

RIDGWAY - Bridgett M. Huff, 36, of St. Marys, was sentenced in Elk County Court Monday on charges that she stole $20,000 from the Walmart Supercenter Store #1792 in Fox Township while employed there over a two-year period.

PGC issues more information on three CWD-positive deer

The Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) announced additional information regarding the three hunter-killed deer that tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Blair and Bedford counties during a press conference held at the PGC's Harrisburg headquarters on Monday afternoon. According to Cal DuBrock, Bureau Director of Wildlife Management for the PGC, the three deer were tested through the commission's aging field checks during the general firearm season.
