Six officers from Elk County Catholic High School's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter were among over 800 students who attended the FBLA State Leadership Workshop at the Penn State Hotel and Conference Center in State College on Nov. 10-11.
Dolores M. Pfaff, 95, a resident of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of 523 Armory Rd., died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013 at the Pinecrest Manor after an illness of the past several months.
She was born Sept. 17, 1919, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Joseph and Caroline Fritz Schloder. On June 3, 1941, in the Sacred Heart Church, she married William L. Pfaff, and he preceded her in death on May 12, 1980.
Elaine Samick Nace, 54, of Bryn Mawr, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at Bryn Mawr Hospital.
She was born March 26, 1959 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Maurice and Rita Samick.
After leaving her hometown of St. Marys, Elaine attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, where she met her husband during their freshman year. After graduation as a medical technologist, she went on to receive a post-graduate degree in Law and began a career in healthcare law and compliance. Throughout her life she enjoyed traveling, hiking, reading, and cooking.
MT. JEWETT â€“Â Activity at the bear check station at the Mt. Jewett Fire Hall in McKean County was slow on Saturday afternoon, with only a dozen bears being brought to the site through 3 p.m. to kick off the opening day of the statewide firearms bear season. In addition to Saturday, the four-day season continues today through Wednesday.
Students in the Elk County Catholic School System (ECCSS) recently presented Elk Regional Health Center with a check for $2,739 to benefit their Women's Imaging Center. The funds were raised during Pink Day activities at the Catholic elementary, middle, and high school.
Karen G. Spence, 56, of Pine Township, died Nov. 14, 2013.
Karen was an all around volunteer at St. Alexis where she ran the Certificate Program, coordinated the festival games, was a homeroom mother, helped with Girl Scouts, vacation bible camp, Junior Achievement, book fair, flea market, cafeteria and playground supervisor.
She enjoyed vacationing and exploring the western national parks with her family and spending time with her kids, traveling, photography and gardening. She will be greatly missed.
Thomas A. Reed, 60, a longtime resident of St. Marys, died Wednesday evening, Nov. 20, 2013 at The Lutheran Home at Kane, where he had more recently resided.
Born June 30, 1953 in St. Marys, he was the son of John Z. and Angela C. Herzing Reed.
Although mentally disabled, he graduated from St. Marys High School.
He is survived by a niece, Ellen Reed of Horseheads, N.Y.; a nephew, Jason Reed of Penn Yan, N.Y.; and a sister-in-law, Emily Reed of Horseheads.Â Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
ST. MARYS â€“ As a result of a comprehensive investigation by the North Central Drug Task Force a search warrant was served on the residence located 419 Erich Rd. in St. Marys.
The search warranted yielded large amounts of cocaine, U.S. currency, firearms and bomb-making materials. The search led to the arrest of two juveniles. The investigation is ongoing.
City Council held a special meeting Friday evening to discuss a cooperative agreement between the City of St. Marys and Creekside Investments for a grant to build a hotel in the city. The grant is a $3 million reimbursement grant being administrated through North Central Enterprises, a non-profit community development organization.
All council members were present. Todd Hanes was present to represent Creekside Investments.
