Despite the recent passage by Pennsylvania House and Senate leaders of a major transportation spending proposal for the state, in the immediate aftermath local planning officials are still feeling the squeeze.

SMA band students selected as All-Americans

The U.S. Army marched into St. Marys Area High School on Wednesday afternoon as they officially honored seniors Catherine Riddle and Jaime Whitaker as being selected as part of the
2014 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band.
They are among only 10 students chosen from Pennsylvania.
With this selection, Riddle and Whitaker join the ranks of an elite group of only 125 musicians and color guard members from across the country who will showcase their talent during a halftime performance at the nationally broadcast U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014.

Pro-life billboard erected on Million Dollar Highway

Drivers entering and leaving St. Marys on the Million Dollar Highway may notice a new billboard that expresses a strong opinion on an issue that often raises strong emotions.
The billboard that reads, “God is pro-life,” and, “Choose to give your baby life,” has been placed by Elk County Right to Life with donations from the Knights of Columbus and the efforts of various community members.
Members of Elk County Right to Life and the Knights of Columbus gathered at the home of Viola Geci on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the placement of the new sign.

County to unveil budget Monday

The Elk County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday morning announced that their proposed budget with be unveiled during a special meeting next week.
The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 25 in Conference Room No. 2 at the Elk County Courthouse Annex.
In other business, the commissioners on Tuesday morning during a meeting approved a five-year contract with Boot Jack Auto Sales for fleet maintenance for county-owned vehicles.

School board approves myriad of items

Members of the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors approved numerous items during their recent meeting.
Superintendent Ann Kearney noted information on food service surveys for parents will be sent home this week. The survey is posted on the school district's website.

Lawrence J. “Larry” Scull

Lawrence J. “Larry” Scull, 75, of Pine Street, Force, died early Monday, Nov. 18, 2013 at home after a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 7, 1938 in St. Marys, son of the late Lawrence J. and Nellie (Bruni) Scull Sr.
A graduate of Bennetts Valley High School, he served in the Army from 1960-1963, including two years in Germany. He retired from PennDOT after 30 years.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bennetts Valley American Legion, and enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years. He lived all his life in Bennetts Valley.

Pearl M. Rudolph

Pearl M. Rudolph, 81, of 207 Hill St., Johnsonburg, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, at Christ the King Manor in DuBois after a brief illness.
She was born April 7, 1932 in Syracuse, N,Y., daughter of the late Salvatori Luigi and Nazarena Tassone Candeloro.
She was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School.
On Jan. 20, 1967 in Wilcox, she married Ellsworth Rudolph, who preceded her in death in 2010.
She is survived by a son, Charles E. Rudolph at home; and a sister, Dora Candeloro Meyer and her husband Ernie of Chandler, Ariz.

David Brian Collins

David Brian Collins, 80, died peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013 with his wife, Pamela, and daughter, Kate, by his side.
He was born in the Midlands of England on Jan. 10, 1933, the son of the late David and Fanny (Flavell) Collins.

Sewer rates will be increased in St. Marys

St. Marys City Council held their regular meeting on Monday, Nov. 18 with all council members present. Minutes from the last meeting were approved as read. No citizen comments were made on agenda topics.

November 17, 2013

Judy A. Leahy, 62, of 432 East Main St., Ridgway, died Saturday morning, Nov. 16, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center following a lengthy illness.
She was born July 9, 1951 in Washington, Pa., the daughter of the late Kenneth and Juanita Sweet Watson.
