Elk Catholic volleyball eliminated by Bishop Carroll 3-0

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team saw their season come to an end on Saturday afternoon as they were defeated 3-0 by the Bishop Carroll Lady Huskies in a PIAA Class A quarterfinal match played at Punxsutawney Area High School. Bishop Carroll recorded set scores of 25-18, 25-19, and 25-17 in the victory.

Karns City Gremlins end Flying Dutchmen's season

The Karns City Gremlins ended the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen's season Friday night in a District 9 Class AA semifinal game by a 55-6 score. The game was played at Karns City.

Veterans honored during annual ceremony

Once again the St. Marys Area High School hosted their annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday afternoon. Numerous veterans from each branch of the Armed Forces were on hand as honored guests sitting onstage at the ceremony.
New this year to the ceremony was the acknowledgement of veterans related to students and staff. Joe Schlimm, SMAHS vice-principal, recited a list of the 121 school district family members who have had relatives serve in the military and their relationship to the veteran. Schlimm's presentation was accompanied by a military video and music.

Ragland attributes freedoms to veterans

In honoring our military veterans the St. Marys Area High School hosted their annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday afternoon during which a guest speaker, retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Donna J. (Wickett) Ragland of St. Marys, emphasized the role veterans have played in securing our valued freedoms and liberties.
Ragland began her military career early, enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1975 during her senior year at Elk County Christian High School. She attended basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Robert E. Herrmann

Robert E. Herrmann, 76, of 729 Long Level Rd., Ridgway, died unexpectedly at his residence on Thursday, Nov. 7.
He was born July 25, 1937 in Ridgway, the son of the late Robert F. and Helen Gerg Herrmann.
He was a lifelong Ridgway resident. Mr. Herrmann was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church. He was a graduate of Ridgway High School, Class of 1956. He had been employed at Keystone Carbon for 38 years. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force and was a Vietnam era veteran. He is survived by his brother, Richard L. Herrmann, and by a sister, Kathryn Herrmann.

All bull tags filled in elk hunt

nformation on elk harvest totals for Friday was unavailable, but the Pennsylvania Game Commission announced on their Facebook page on Friday morning that all of the 26 antlered elk tags issued this year had been filled by the end of the day on Thursday.
At that time, 26 hunters still had the opportunity to harvest antlerless animals by the end of the weeklong hunt, which concludes today. A total of 60 antlerless tags were awarded this season.

Water consumption rates to increase 10 cents

St. Marys City Council members voted unanimously to increase water consumption fees 10 cents in order to generate sufficient revenue to balance the sewage treatment fund budget. This fee was last raised in 2005.
A total of $23,139 is currently being taken out of the cash reserve fund to balance the sewage fund budget. This increase, based on the system's 4,565 customers, would equal a revenue of $32,380, enough to balance the sewage fund's 2014 budget.

PSUD students get hands-on experience at elk check station

QUEHANNA – Students in a wildlife management techniques class at Penn State DuBois found themselves out of the classroom and actually out in the field earlier this week as they traveled to the Pennsylvania Game Commission's elk check station in Quehanna and had the opportunity to assist PGC staff in examining and taking samples from elk harvested in this year's elk hunt.

Board reviews participation requirements

St. Marys Area School District's Board of Directors workshop meeting was held Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. in the St. Marys Area High School library. Following roll call, seniors Brianna Nussbaum and Cassandra Daniels presented on their experience at the Pennsylvania School Board Association Leadership Conference.

Janice M. Molella

Janice M. Molella, 80, of Cushing Avenue, Johnsonburg, died late Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013 at UPMC Hamot of Erie after a short illness.
She was born April 15, 1933 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Herman and Helen (Koppitch) Grabofski.
A graduate of Johnsonburg Area High School, Class of 1951, she had been employed as an LPN at the hospital in St. Marys for 40 years.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and lived all her life in Johnsonburg.
