Jacqueline Turner

Jacqueline Turner, 74, of 3986 Tonbridge Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C. died on Monday, Sept. 30 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a lengthy illness.
She was born May 12, 1937 in St. Marys, the daughter of the late E. J. "Jack" and Loretta Benninger Terry. She graduated from Central Catholic High School class of 1957.
On Dec. 10, 1983 in Ridgway she married William Turner who survives.

Carmella P. Sellers

Carmella P. Sellers, age 81, of Weedville, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center after a lengthy illness.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 25, 2013 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Force, with Father Thomas Tyler celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Joseph Church Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
The family will be receiving friends from 9–10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 25 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Force
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Bennetts Valley Ambulance.

Linda L. Murphy

Linda L. Murphy, 65, of Cape Coral, Fla., formerly of Key West and Philadelphia, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013 in Cape Coral.
She was born Oct. 16, 1947 in Oil City to James and Jeanne Clifford.

Margie Rose "Babe" Cherry

Margie Rose "Babe" Cherry, age 83, of 5000 Whitehaven Court, Richmond, Va., formerly of Northridge, Calif., died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013 at Autumn Care, Hanover, Va. following a lengthy illness.
She was born July 2, 1930 in Kane, the daughter of Gustav and Elsie Shaffer Johnson.
She was married to Victor "Vito" Cherry on Jan. 13, 1948 in Johnsonburg. He died Dec. 21, 2000.
She had resided in Virginia since 2009, and formerly lived in California. She graduated from Kane High School in 1947.

Prelim plans move ahead for hotel project

Preliminary plans to proceed with the downtown hotel project were given the go-ahead on Monday evening as St. Marys City Council approved a request from Todd Hanes of St. Marys, representing Creekside Investments, as the project developer.
The project will consist of a 65-room national flag hotel.
Hanes said he must obtain council's permission first in order to proceed with the project because there is grant money involved coming from North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission. The city is also involved in the process.

A new unifying symbol designed to "galvanize greater awareness and action to end domestic violence and sexual assault" is gaining momentum.

Big Spring 10K to benefit area residents

The fourth annual Big Spring 10K walk/run will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 11 a.m. at the Toby ball field, with the funds raised through this year's event benefitting a pair of area residents: Ray Gornati, a recent heart transplant patient from St. Marys, and Tommy Gilmore, a 7-year-old from Ridgway who is battling cancer.
Race organizers Rob Singer and Chuck Beyer explained that the race benefits different individuals each year, and the idea behind the event came about because there are always people who need help.

Crusaders lose to Curwensville 35-8 on senior night

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders suffered a 35-8 defeat on their senior night by the Curwensville Golden Tide on Saturday evening at Dutch Country Stadium.

DuBois Area soccer hands Lady Dutch 6-3 loss Saturday

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch closed out their regular season Saturday morning as they hosted the DuBois Area Lady Beavers at the SMAHS soccer field.
DuBois came away with a 6-3 victory.

Beavers hand Dutchmen 1-0 loss in season finale

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch soccer team closed out their season Saturday afternoon by hosting the DuBois Area Beavers at the SMAHS soccer field.
DuBois defeated the Dutchmen by a 1-0 score. St. Marys ends their season with a 5-13 record.
