Danial J. Ruffner, 33, of Scribner Avenue, DuBois, and formerly of Kersey, died at UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013 following complications of a long battle with Leukemia.
He was born Jan. 2, 1980 in Lewistown, a son of Donald and Cheryl (Heiberger) Ruffner of Kersey and Casey and Deborah (Werneth) Bowers of DuBois.
Gloria J. Copella, 63, of 332 Brandy Camp Circle, Ridgway, died on Sunday morning, Oct. 20, 2013, at the Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness.
She was born March 15, 1950 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Gerald Jerome and Mary Elizabeth Kline Copella.Â She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Ridgway High School, Class of 1968.Â She was an employee of the St. Marys Carbon Company.
She is survived by her brother, Laverne Copella of Brandy Camp, and her nephew, Gerald Richard Copella of St. Marys.
There will be no visitation.
Margaret L. Shoup, 90, of 759 Johnsonburg Road Apt. 14, St. Marys and formerly of Filmore Road died on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born Aug. 22, 1923 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late George and Rose Balaban Mahovlich.
On April 24, 1946 in Sacred Heart Church, she married the late Albert "Bert" Shoup, who preceded her in death on Oct. 9, 1999.
Colorful foliage was the ideal backdrop on a recent fall day in Benezette. Approximately 40 Rocky Mountain elk are shown in a field located adjacent to the Elk Country Visitors Center recently. Shown in the foreground is a young elk nursing from its mother, while another elk rests on the ground in the background as other elk roam the field while feeding. The fall is peak time for elk viewing as this is the rut (mating) season.
Updates to the St. Marys Area School District bullying/cyberbullying policy were approved during a recent school board meeting.
Among the policy highlights cover any incident of bullying/cyberbullying which is committed in the school, on school grounds, in school vehicles, at a designated bus stop or at any activity sponsored or sanctioned by the school.
The Redbank Valley Bulldogs handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch a 23-0 setback Friday night at Dutch Country Stadium.
Nancy Densmore-Wilson, 55, of Laurens, Iowa, formerly of Ridgway, died on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at the Smith-Loterbour-Powers Funeral Home in Laurens with Pastor David Lyons officiating. Burial will be at Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct 21 at the Smith-Loterbour-Powers Funeral Home in Laurens. An Eastern Star Service will begin at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Twenty-five years after the boulevard in downtown St. Marys was named after General Edward C. "Shy" Meyer, a new plaque was dedicated in his honor during a Friday morning ceremony. The former Chief of Staff of the United States Army was in attendance at the event along with several of his family members, friends, City of St. Marys representatives, numerous fellow military veterans and area residents.
"We are here on this momentous occasion to honor one of our native sons, Gen. Edward Meyer, for his 36 years of accomplishments in the U.S. Army," said City Manager Dave Greene.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team closed out their home regular season Thursday night with a 3-0 victory over the Johnsonburg Ramettes on Senior Night at the Dutch Oven.
The Lady Dutch won the first set by a 25-13 score. They won the second set by a 25-18 score and took the third set 25-11 to win the match 3-0.
Richard L. Young, 87, a resident of Highland View Health Care, Brockway, and formerly of 1168 Windfall Rd., St. Marys, died on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at Highland View.
He was born June 29, 1926 in Huntington, W.Va., son of the late Charles and Lida Hall Young. He was a graduate of Huntington High School and Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. He had been a resident of St. Marys since 1966 and was a retired employee of Pure Carbon Company.
On Dec. 13, 1958 in Huntington, W.Va., he married Geraldine P. Powell, who preceded him in death on July 9, 2013.
