ST. MARYS - "Methylenedioxypyrovalerone is here," said St. Marys City Police Officer Greg McManus in speaking before a group of concerned parents and local law enforcement about the rise of stimulant bath salts use in the area at a town hall meeting held at the South St. Marys Street earlier this week.
The scene in the St. Marys Area High School gymnasium on Thursday evening was reminiscent of a championship game at the Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament -- the stands were packed and spectators crowded in the doorways and lined the walls behind each of the hoops. Staff members eventually had to turn people away, declaring that the event was sold out.
With the opening day of trout season just around the corner, anglers will want to think twice about harvesting more than the legal daily limit now that Gov. Tom Corbett has signed into law tougher anti-poaching legislation.

David J. Zimmett, 67, a recent resident of the Kane Lutheran Home and formerly of Ridgway and St. Marys, died on Friday morning, March 29, 2013 following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb 17, 1946 in St. Marys, a son of Madeline Wilson Zimmett of St. Marys and the late Joseph Zimmett.
He was Methodist by faith and had been a member of Ridgway United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy. He worked for a number of years at Stackpole Carbon Company and also worked home construction.
He was an avid fisherman and a devoted Yankees fan.
John J. Boschert, 83, of 153 Townview Rd., St. Marys, died Friday, March 29, 2013 at his residence after a brief illness.
He was born July 28, 1929, in St. Marys, son of the late Walter and Anna Buchheit Boschert.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools. He was a former employee of ServiceMaster at the St. Marys Area School District, retiring in 1993.
On June 28, 1957 in the St. Mary's Rectory, he married Anna M. Carlson, and she survives.
Florence A. Walsh, 84, of 311 Pine St., St. Marys, died Friday, March 29, 2013, at her home, unexpectedly.
She was born April 1, 1928, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Frank and Marie Donahue Clonan. On June 26, 1948, in the Sacred Heart Church, she married Richard J. Walsh, and he preceded her in death on March 14, 1991.
Mrs. Walsh was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1946. She was a retired employee of the St. Marys Carbon Co., where she had worked for over 25 years. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Church.

JEFFERSON CO. – A Ridgway woman has been sentenced to one year in the Jefferson County Accelerated Rehabilitation Program after she pleaded guilty to selling marijuana on behalf of a Jefferson County inmate in August of 2012.
A new cancer support group is being started in Kersey as an outlet for patients, survivors and caregivers battling the disease. Their first meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 1 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Kersey United Methodist Church and will continue to meet at the same time and location during the first Monday of every month.
