Douglas had high level of drug in bloodstream

KANE – An affidavit of probable cause filed in Magisterial District Court 48-3-04 shows Kathleen S. Douglas, age 37, of North Tionesta Avenue, Kane, had "levels of the Schedule IV controlled substance Clonazepam (that) were several times greater than they should have been given the dosage prescribed" when she was involved in a fatal crash that killed six people.

Community-wide Pink Day set for Friday

The annual community-wide Pink Day is scheduled for Friday throughout the county, and area students - and residents in general - are encouraged to "get their pink on" to show their support for breast cancer awareness.
According to information available on the American Cancer Society's website, "about one in eight women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime."

Board approves purchase of playground equipment

Plans for the South St. Marys Street Elementary School playground are moving ahead steadily as the St. Marys Area School District board of directors approved the purchase of playground equipment totaling $77,700 during their Monday evening meeting.
Included in the equipment are three bridges, three slides, three overhead features, 14 climbers, a balance beam, a roller table and six play panels. The playground is custom design as organizers have been able to choose the equipment which best suits their needs.

SMASD lowers lunch debt, plans drills

Cafeteria debt for the St. Marys Area School District is at a low of $1,796.62 as reported by SMASD Superintendent Ann Kearney during a recent school board workshop.
Kearney credits Jennifer Asti, director of food services for the district, in her efforts of significantly decreasing the debt.
Just a few years ago the debt was as high as $8,000. Kearney stated the debt is much lower than it typically is this time of year.

iCafe provides after-school destination for teens

Anyone traveling in the vicinity of the Catholic Community Center, located at 142 Church St., on weekday afternoons may have noticed a sign outside the building inviting teens to iCafe.
iCafe has been in existence in some form for a number of years, but only started being open on an almost daily basis about a year ago when John Amoratis took over as the youth minister for St. Marys' three Catholic parishes.

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team (4-3) saw their KSAC Big School Division record slip to 2-2 on the season as they lost a 33-26 contest to the Moniteau Warriors (1-6) Friday night at West Sunbury.

Brockway Rovers down Crusaders 49-20

The Elk County Catholic Crusader football team showed some improvement at times during their contest against Brockway on Friday night but ended up losing to the Rovers by a score of 49-20.

Victor C. Bish, age 70, of Brockport, died peacefully Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013 at his home after a brief illness.
He was born on May 2, 1943 in St. Marys, son of the late Kenneth and Martha Heiberger Bish. He married Lorraine C. “Lorri” Lechien on Aug. 30, 1985 in Las Vegas, Nev.
He was a die-setter in various local powered metal factories, as well as in Colorado and California. He retired as a self-employed powder metal consultant in 2005. He enjoyed the outdoors and being with family and friends.
