Betty Jean Yale

Betty Jean Yale, 69, of 220 Fairview R, Kersey, and formerly of 123 Hollow Rd., Kersey, died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, at her home after a lengthy illness.
She was born April 16, 1944 in Baxter, daughter of the late Harold C. and Betty K. Wonderling Terwilliger Sr. She was a lifelong resident of the area, attended Kersey schools, and was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1962.
On Nov. 19, 1967, in Brockport, she married Richard W. Yale, who preceded her in death on Nov. 1, 2009.

Elaine G. Higgins

Elaine G. Higgins, 91, of 910 South Michael Rd., St. Marys, died on Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at the Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness.
She was born Sept. 6, 1922 in Latrobe, daughter of the late Louis and Hilda Schick Geary. She had been a resident of St. Marys since 1950. She was a graduate of Latrobe High School, Class of 1940 and the Greensburg School of Business. She retired from North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development in 2000 after 30 years of service.

Daniel C. Kronenwetter

Daniel C. Kronenwetter, 60, of 203 Grandview Rd., St. Marys, died on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013 from complications of esophageal cancer.
He was born Oct. 12, 1952 in St. Marys, son of the late Carl M. and Dorothy G. Wendel Kronenwetter.

Corbett touts public-private partnerships

BENEZETTE – During his visit to Elk County on Thursday, Governor Tom Corbett emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships within the state's tourism industry, specifically relating to state parks, visitors centers and more.
"I think it's a wave of the future of the industry not just in Pennsylvania, but around the country, where we can get more bang for our buck if we invoke the private community," Corbett said.
He added by growing in such partnerships allows everyone to get a better product rather than just relying upon state tax dollars.

Meals On Wheels seeking new volunteers

George and Dolly Bauer arrived at the Elk Haven Nursing Home Friday morning to load their car with prepared hot meals to deliver to elderly residents through the Meals On Wheels program. George and Dolly have been volunteering their time to Meals On Wheels for over 20 years.
George, who is retired from Keystone Carbon, described his volunteer experience as a good way to stay physically active and to stay connected with the community.

Andrew W. Biel Sr.

Andrew W. Biel Sr., age 87, of 424 Water Street Ext., Apt. 309, Johnsonburg, died Thursday morning, Oct. 10, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys.
He was born March 3, 1926 in Rasselas, son of John and Anna Barbara Biel Biel.
He married Imogene McAninch on Nov. 13, 1950, she died Sept. 3, 1985.
He resided in Johnsonburg for the past seven years, formerly of Wilcox. He attended Wilcox schools and was a member of St. Ann's and Holy Cross Churches.

Corbett visits PA Wilds in effort to promote tourism

BENEZETTE – In an effort to promote tourism, Governor Tom Corbett visited the Elk Country Visitor Center on Thursday afternoon to highlight the Pennsylvania Wilds as a top destination for travelers as well as to mark the 100 years since elk were reintroduced into the region.
"Unique tourist destinations like the Elk Country Visitor Center support Pennsylvania's tourism industry and help create and sustain local jobs," Corbett said. "Attendance at the center has grown to 200,000 tourists annually, each spending money and supporting local small businesses."

EQT, school board discuss details of road use

Representatives from EQT Corp. were in attendance at the St. Marys Area School District board of directors meeting on Thursday evening to answer any questions in regard to the right-of-way the company has obtained for use of a road located next to Bennetts Valley Elementary School.
EQT Community Advisor Josie Schultz said in the new agreement they have included a clause stating the company will return the road to good or better condition than it was found. Also added in the agreement were the installation of safety fencing between the school and the road.

Lady Crusader volleyball downs Kane squad 3-0

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team raised their record to 9-2 on the season with a 3-0 victory over the Kane Lady Wolves Thursday night at the ECCHS gym.
