Elkers repeat as Elk County Golf Tournament champions

The Ridgway Elkers defended their Elk County Golf Tournament title on Thursday afternoon at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course, finishing in first place in the 16th annual tournament with a team score of 389 in the 18-hole event.

Lady Dutch tennis team advances to D9-AA title match

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch tennis team advanced to the District 9-AA team championship match by defeating the Johnsonburg Ramettes by a 3-2 score Wednesday afternoon at the SMAHS courts.
The Lady Dutch, the second seed, will now meet top seeded Elk County Catholic on Monday, Oct. 14 at a site and time to be announced.

ECC golfers lose to Ridgway 200-207

The Elk County Catholic golf team lost to the Ridgway Elkers 200 to 207 on Wednesday afternoon during the Crusaders' final home match of the season at the Leaning Pines Public Golf Course.
The medalist for the day was ECC's Elliott Struble with a one-under-par round of 34.

Grant applications approved for parks project

Several grant applications to obtain possible funding for the St. Marys Recreation Board multi-park project were unanimously approved by members of City Council.
Community and Economic Development Coordinator Tina Gradizzi presented information about each application to council. They include requests for $125,000 to the A.J. and Sigismunda Palumbo Charitable Trust, for $60,000 to the Stackpole-Hall Foundation and for $6,400 to the Elk County Community Foundation, all for phase II project funding.

Small fire at area business

Elk Company 1 Crystal Fire Department and St. Marys Ambulance were dispatched at 12:43 p.m. Wednesday afternoon to Bluewater Thermal Solutions located at 118 Access Rd. off of West Creek Road in St. Marys for a report of a piece of equipment on fire inside the building.

Amoratis involved in creation of new app

Disseminating information to today's youth can be a challenging task since they often do not have the same habits as those in older generations. For John Amoratis, Youth Minister for the three Catholic parishes in St. Marys, that challenge led to the creation of a new app for iOS devices that will eventually help individuals stay in touch with church happenings without having to read a physical copy of the weekly bulletin.
Amoratis explained that the idea came about after roughly 42 of the current 60 Life Teen students were surveyed about how often they read the church bulletin.

Richard A. Gahr

Richard A. Gahr, 66, of 48 Grandview Rd., Williamsport, died unexpectedly, but peacefully, Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at his home.
Born Aug. 16, 1947 in St. Marys, he was the son of Robert A. and Edith Jackson Gahr.
He is survived by his wife, the former Peg O’Malley. They observed their 43rd anniversary on Aug. 15.
In addition to his wife, Rick is survived by sons Matthew (Amanda) of London, United Kingdom, and Daniel (Shirin) of San Francisco, Calif.; brothers Thomas A. (Joanne) of Northfield, N.J. and Patrick A. (Ann) of New Cumberland; and two grandchildren, Aidan and Audrey Gahr.

Representatives attend non-profit academy

KERSEY – Representatives of non-profit organizations in the Elk County region gathered Tuesday morning at Kersey’s Red Fern banquet hall to attend the Non-profit Academy, a fund-raising workshop hosted by the Elk County Community Foundation and Leadership Elk County.

Elk County Catholic's Marla Scacchitti and Rachel Stauffer captured the District 9-AA tennis doubles championship Tuesday afternoon at the DuBois Area High School courts by defeating St. Marys Area's Amy Orr and Sarah Casey in the championship match.
