ECC cross country teams host SMA and St. Joe's

The Elk County Catholic cross country teams played host to the St. Marys Area and St. Joseph's Catholic Academy squads Tuesday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
In the boys' races, Elk Catholic edged St. Marys 28-29 while losing to St. Joseph's 24-31. St. Joseph's also defeated St. Marys Area 26-30.
In the girls' race, St. Marys Area downed Elk Catholic 24-31 and St. Joseph's 16-41. ECC beat St. Joseph's 17-41.

Lady Crusader volleyball downs DuBois Area

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team raised their record to 7-1 on the season with a 3-0 victory over the DuBois Area Lady Beavers Tuesday night at the ECCHS gym.

John Edward Zernell, Sr.

John Edward Zernell, Sr., 74, of Daniel Street, Brockport, died on Monday, Sept. 30, 2013 at Geisinger Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born July 12, 1939 in Weedville, son of the late Sylvester & Loretta (Spencer) Zernell.
He married Debra (Butler) on February 27, 1988.
He lived most of his life in Weedville and Penfield and the past eight years in Brockport.
Mr. Zernell worked at Carbon Graphite of St. Mary for 34 years. He was a member of the Penfield Firemen’s and past volunteer with Bennetts Valley Ambulance where he served for many years.

Helene A. Shuster Weis

Helene A. Shuster Weis, 86, of Rockford, Ill., died at 10:50 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, in her home.  
Born July 18, 1927, in St. Marys, she was the daughter of Mathew and Johanna (Stemberger) Shuster.  
She married James E. Weis Aug. 23, 1947, in St. Marys. Helene spent many wonderful years as a “homemaker” because making a home and being a mother was her finest accomplishment. As a mother, she was beautiful and vulnerable and taught her children, not on purpose, the risk of having love as your only job. She also taught them the importance of family and the richness of friends.

Farmers National Bank opens in St. Marys

Bank employees continued to assist customers Tuesday morning as the lobby filled with visiting board members while refreshments were served for the opening of Farmers National Bank's new office, located in City Hall in downtown St. Marys.

Clock tower issues being addressed

The Elk County Commissioners on Tuesday confirmed issues with the courthouse clock tower and approved additional repairs for exterior work on the building.

SMA's Aubrey Wiesner wins District 9-AA singles title

St. Marys Area's Aubrey Wiesner won the District 9-AA singles tennis championship Monday afternoon at the DuBois Area High School courts.
Wiesner defeated teammate Amy Orr in a three-set championship match.

Dutch golfers defeat Johnsonburg 219-228

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch golf team defeated the Johnsonburg Rams 219-228 on Monday afternoon at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course.

New shop unmasks array of costumes

With over 700 costumes, masks, accessories and jewelry, area residents from young to old can find an array of disguises at the new Costumes by Mary shop located at 120 Arbutus Ln., off of the Million Dollar Highway, in St. Marys.
Today marks the opening of the shop owned by Mary Jin. Costumes are available for sale and for rent until Nov. 1. The shop is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-noon and 4:30-8:30 p.m., Saturday noon-7 p.m and Sunday noon-6 p.m. Following the Halloween season, the shop is open year round by appointment only.

Lindberg Furniture purchases historic airplane

JOHNSONBURG – Lindberg Furniture recently purchased a 1976 Beechcraft plane which now sits atop the roof of their Johnsonburg store. The aircraft was used as a training plane for pilots in Virginia between the years of 1978 and 1989.
