DuBois Central edges Dutchmen 60-56 in OT

The DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals outscored the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch 6-2 in overtime last night at the Dutch Oven to come away with a 60-54 win.

Sister Josepha Meyer

Sister Josepha Meyer, 86, of Emmaus, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013 in St. Luke’s Hospital, Allentown.
Born in St. Marys, she was the daughter of the late Urban and Caroline (Weinzierl) Meyer. Sister Josepha entered the Benedictine Sisters in St. Marys in 1949. She taught in schools in the Diocese of Erie and served her Benedictine community in a variety of ways. She helped establish the Transfiguration Monastery in Emmaus, which later became a mission of Emmanuel Monastery in Lutherville, Md.

Teresa "Jutta Fodge" McRae

Teresa "Jutta Fodge" McRae died over the weekend as a result of injuries sustained from being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in her hometown of Albuquerque, N.M.

Ralph A. Gasbarre

Ralph A. Gasbarre, 78, of 112 Cushing Ave., Johnsonburg, died Wednesday night, Dec. 18, 2013 at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
He was born May 20, 1935 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Sabatino and Elizabeth Mangine Gasbarre.
On July 2, 1960 in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, he married Mary Bliss and she survives.
A lifelong Johnsonburg resident, he attended Johnsonburg public schools, and was a member of Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg.

Paul J. Bauer

Paul J. Bauer, 77, of 145 Larch Rd., St. Marys, died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys, on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013 following a lengthy illness.
He was born Aug. 11, 1936 in St. Marys, a son of the late Joseph B. and Regina Mattmiller Bauer.
On June 29, 1963 in St. Marys Church, he married Eleanore "Ellie" Herbstritt Bauer, who survives. 
They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary over the summer.

City police investigating two-vehicle collision

The St. Marys City Police Department reports investigating a two-vehicle collision that occurred on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at approximately 10:10 p.m. on SR 255/S. St. Marys Street near Jeep Road.

Elk County Catholic School System announces new president

Bishop Lawrence T. Persico of the Diocese of Erie, the Board of Members, and the Board of Directors of the Elk County Catholic School System are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Sam MacDonald to the position of president for ECCSS.
MacDonald is the second president of the school system, having replaced Fr. Michael P. Ferrick who was transferred to St. Peter Cathedral in Erie by Bishop Persico in June of this year. Mary Agnes Marshall served as interim president until the position was filled.

Terms of office may be extended

A new proposed ordinance would amend the city code to establish the terms of office for the Recreation Board to be five years. This would be in line with all of the city boards who also have five-year terms.
In a 5-2 vote council approved only the publication of the ordinance. Mayor Sally Geyer and Councilman Dick Dornisch voted in opposition of the ordinance. Dornisch stated he is in favor of term limits on council, the mayor and all boards.

Crash on SR 255

Emergency dispatchers reported a vehicle over an embankment late Wednesday night in St. Marys on state Route 255 off the northbound lane. Initial reports indicated there was entrapment with open wounds, and a STAT MedEvac helicopter responded to the scene as the highway was closed down. A second chopper was reportedly ordered to be on standby at the hospital and a PennDOT supervisor was called to the crash scene. Elk Company 1 and 3, along with St. Marys Ambulance and Elkland Search and Rescue responded to the crash. No further information was available.

Mary J. (Krug) Schlimm

Mary J. (Krug) Schlimm, 76, of 480 Dippold Ave., St. Marys, died on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013 at her home unexpectedly.
She was born Jan. 15, 1937 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Edward and Clara Hasselman Krug.
On June 28, 1958, in the Queen of the World Church, she married Harrison Schlimm and he survives.
Mary was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1955. She was a retired employee of the St. Marys Area School District where she had worked for over 30 years.
