Policy resolutions on issues important to agriculture and rural living were adopted at the Elk County Farm Bureau annual meeting, held Sept. 14 at Gunnerâ€™s Restaurant in St. Marys.
Policy recommendations on state or national issues will be submitted to the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB) for statewide consideration.
The membership also heard an update on the organizationâ€™s activities for the year from its President, Roger Auman, St. Marys.
State Representative Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) honored members of the 2013 St. Marys Little League softball senior all star team on Sunday evening at the Sacred Heart Activity Center in recognition of the state title that the team won earlier this summer.
St. Marys had defeated Plains in a 4-3 come from behind victory at Ber-Vaughn Park in Berwick on Monday, July 22.
The St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors approved several personnel items during their recent meeting.
All employment recommendations are provisional for 30 days pending receipt of Act 151 and Act 34 clearance documentation and pre-employment drug testing if applicable.
The following support personnel were hired:
â€¢Shannon Eckels of St. Marys was hired effective Sept. 4 as a tutor at Bennetts Valley Elementary at a rate of $9 per hour. Eckels is currently a substitute within the district. She holds a bachelor of science degree in education with elementary certification.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen raised their record to 2-1 on the season with a 32-22 victory over the Brookville Raiders Friday night at Dutch Country Stadium.
The Bradford Lady Owls soccer team advanced to the championship of the Bucktail Tournament with a 3-1 victory over the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders Friday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
Elk Catholic will take on St. Marys Area this morning at 10 a.m. at the SMAHS soccer field in the consolation game. Bradford meets Ridgway today at noon at SMAHS for the title. Ridgway beat St. Marys 5-0 Friday afternoon.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch and Ridgway Lady Elkers faced off for the second time in three days on Friday afternoon as they battled in an opening round match of the 15th annual Bucktail Girls Soccer Tournament at the SMAHS soccer field. Ridgway picked up right where they left off on Wednesday, shutting out St. Marys 5-0 on Friday afternoon to advance to the championship game today at 12 p.m.
Representatives from the offices of state senator Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson) and state representative Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) were on hand Friday to pay tribute to Metaldyne employees for reaching 600 consecutive safety days at the facility atop Boot Jack Hill in Ridgway.
Sitting on 619 consecutive safety days as of Friday, the previous record was 587, achieved on Oct. 7, 2009.
With 600-plus now under their belts, officials at Metaldyne continued to stress the importance of worker safety during a luncheon Friday at the plant located at 1149 Rocky Rd. in Ridgway.
Charges have been filed against four suspects linked with the operation of an alleged "meth lab" at 41 Anderson St., Mt. Jewett.
The four include:
*Jeffrey Allan Cabisca, 39.
*Jennifer Louise Shugars, 40.
*Kelsey Louise Cabisca, 20.
*Chad Allen Ginkel, 32.
The Cabiscas and Shugars until recently resided in the house at 41 Anderson St., Mt. Jewett.
Ginkel resides at 146 W. Main St., Mt. Jewett.
All four are charged with criminal conspiracy in the illegal "manufacture of methamphetamine."
Friday the 13th may traditionally be regarded as unlucky, but 13 proved to be the lucky number for one Kersey man on Friday morning.
Ronald Wildfire, of Kersey, was the thirteenth individual selected for an antlered elk license in this yearâ€™s elk license drawing, which was conducted by the Pennsylvania Game Commission at their headquarters in Harrisburg and streamed live over the internet. This yearâ€™s elk hunt will be held from Nov. 4-9 with an extended hunting period outside the Elk Management Area from Nov. 11-16.
Jean M. Parmigiani, 74, formerly of 122 Center St. , St. Marys, died in the early morning of Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born April 15, 1939 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Joseph and Angela (Agosti) Parmigiani.
She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Kersey. She had been employed by Stackpole Carbon for 28 years.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two aunts and one uncle.
