March 26th
Members of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority held their monthly meeting Tuesday afternoon at the Elk County Recycling Center in St. Marys on to allow members to see the facility firsthand and learn about improvements that have been made to the site.
Nancy R. Yates, 75, of Meadville died at home Sunday, February 24, 2013.Â
She was born May 11, 1937 in Johnsonburg, a daughter of the late William and Edith Lundberg Launer. Â
She married William Jack Yates on July 8, 1961, and he preceded her in death February 1, 2008.
She was a 1954 graduate of Johnsonburg High School. She was employed first at East End Elementary School and then in the Dean of Students Office at Allegheny College, both in Meadville, from where she retired.
Nick Martin, 22, was charged Tuesday night with criminal homicide and related charges in the death of 18-year-old Alyssa Forsyth, according to authorities at a 6:30 p.m. press conference. He is incarcerated in Elk County Prison and not eligible for bail.

Marthadel S. “Marty” Yeager Moyer, 88, formerly of St. Marys, died peacefully at her home in El Segundo, Calif., with her family by her side, on Saturday, March 16, 2013 after a brief illness.
Marty was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Moyer; her parents, George Yeager and Marcella Schatz Yeager; and her brother, Gilbert F. “Gib” Yeager, all of St. Marys.
In the capital city of Managua, Nicaragua, area students are participants in a doctor's efforts to bridge the divide between the local population and basic health care services.
The Elk County Conservation District is one step closer in its plans to improve the West Creek Wetland Trail located in St. Marys.

RIDGWAY - Questions surrounding the potential of adverse environmental impact of injection wells used in the disposal of wastewater produced in the natural gas drilling process were addressed in a presentation from Karen Johnson, chief of the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Underground Injection Control Program's Ground Water and Enforcement Branch at a recent meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force.
Quala-Die Inc. has partnered with St. Marys Area High School in offering a new job-training program for co-op students, primarily for those in the school's metal working program.
March 22nd
Johnsonburg boys basketball's season did not end as sweet as the Rams would have hoped for.
But in the end, Johnsonburg made the District 12 champion Vaux Cougars work to earn their gold medals.
The St. Marys Area High School recognized winter sports athletes Thursday night at the annual SMAHS Winter Sports Program held in Carpin Auditorium.
