Joan M. "Joni" Thompson, 67, of 109 Hemlock Ln., Kersey, died on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born June 28, 1946 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Sabatini Snyder.
On June 6, 1970 in Dagus Mines, she married Roger Thompson, who survives.
Emma L. Anderson, 80, of 1123 South Michael Rd., St. Marys, died at her home on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013 following a lengthy illness.
She was born May 11, 1933 in Dagus Mines, a daughter of the late Charles and Lillian Colson Anderson.
She was a lifelong resident of the area.Â She was an avid reader and enjoyed taking long hikes in the woods.Â Together with her lifelong companion Pete, they frequented and enjoyed their friends at many local restaurants, including the Hilltop, the Corner Restaurant, the Benezette Store and Monica's.Â
HAMLIN TWP. â€“ Six people were killed Saturday evening in a fatal two-car crash on state Route 219 at Mead Run Road in Hamlin Township, McKean County.
Kathy Douglas, age 36, of Kane, driving a 2005 Jeep Liberty, suffered serious injuries in the crash along with a 10-year-old juvenile. Two other juveniles, ages 12 and 6, died in the crash.
All four occupants in a second vehicle, a 2004 Pontiac Bonneville, died. They included Gary Beimel, age 62, Elaine Beimel, age 55, David Cuneo, age 54, and Florence Donachy, age 81, all of St. Marys.
The Elk County Catholic Crusaders opened their season on the road on Friday evening, losing to the Smethport Hubbers 28-21 in Smethport.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team opened their season last night by traveling to Karns City to take on the Gremlins in a Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference (KSAC) Big School Division contest.
The Gremlins came away with a 42-0 victory over the Dutch.
Paul W. Malone, 68, died early Friday morning, Aug. 30, 2013, at his Hickory Road home in St. Marys. He died of complications from an aggressive form of lymphoma.
He was born on Friday, Sept. 8, 1944 in St. Marys, son of the late William and Pauline (Horning) Malone. He married Mary Geyer on Aug. 21, 1970 at St. Boniface Church in Kersey and they just observed their 43rd wedding anniversary. They are the parents of three children and five grandchildren. His family was present for his final days.
Vertie M. Stewart, 78, of Oak Manor on Chestnut St., St. Marys, died on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 3, 1934 in Mountain City, Tenn., a daughter of the late Lacy and Sara Edna Stewart.
The St. Marys Area United Way kicked off its 2013-2014 fundraising campaign during local high school events on Thursday evening. Agency representatives were on hand at the St. Marys Area High School's Meet the Dutch night and Elk County Catholic School System's Family Picnic and Bonfire.
The new goal for this year's campaign is $180,000, a decrease from last year's goal of $195,000.
The Kane Area School Board Directors issued a statement Friday to "put to rest" the disciplinary issue involving high school teacher Jeff Gibbs.
"The process involved with personnel issues prevents the district from making specific comments. We have respected the process. Now that the issue is concluded, we are able to make a statement.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader golf team remained perfect on the season as they defeated the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen by a 162-172 Thursday afternoon in a match played at the Leaning Pines Public Golf Course.
