Horse programs showcased during Farm Bureau Tour

KERSEY – The 2013 Elk County Farm Bureau Legislative Farm Tour showcased the talents of Dave and Diane Gillen as part of their horse training, boarding and recently created riding lesson program on the Double D Farm located on Frey Road in Kersey.
As the host of the tour, the Gillens welcomed attendees to the small family farm. The event took place inside their large indoor horse riding arena.

Individuals remember some of community's small businesses

Small businesses play an important role in communities, and throughout St. Marys' history there have been a variety of businesses that have come and gone that area residents still recall fondly. The Daily Press recently asked users on Facebook which former small businesses are most memorable to them.
One business that was mentioned often was Auman's Store, which was located on Benedict Street.

Results of Bavarian Hills Ladies Member-Guest

The 22nd annual Ladies Member-Guest was held recently at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course. A total of 44 women participated in the two-person scramble, best-ball event that was sponsored by the Bavarian Hills Ladies Auxiliary.
The team of Kristy Hanes and Maryann Feldbauer were the low gross first place winners with an even par score of 72.
Low net honors went to Nancy Pistner and Jen Greenthaner with a 55.

Tim Wittman inducted into Pa. Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame

STATE COLLEGE — At the May 19 Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association banquet, St. Marys native Tim Wittman was inducted into the PWCA Hall of Fame. The banquet and induction ceremonies were held at the Ramada Inn in State College.
Wittman is a 1987 graduate of St. Marys Area High School and a 1992 graduate of Penn State University with a B.S. degree in Landscape Contracting. Wittman was born and raised in St. Marys. The fourth oldest of six children, his parents, Maureen and John "Elroy" Wittman still make their home in St. Marys.

ECC golfers defeat Johnsonburg 207-231

The Elk County Catholic High School golf team recorded another victory on Monday afternoon, this team defeating rival Johnsonburg by a score of 207-231.

Co-op gift shop opens at new location

The Country Home Gift Shoppe, a co-op business featuring over 40 vendors, recently held a ribbon-cutting at their new location at 1110 South St. Marys Street.
"We relocated because it has always been our goal to have the shop in a country home to give the 'country cottage' look to match the type of items we sell. We have found our forever home and this will be our last move," said Dawn Radaelli, owner.
The shop's slogan "Where We Make Your House A Home" also echoes Radaelli's sentiments.

Two-vehicle crash in Ridgway

There was a two-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon involving a white four-door truck and a white Comcast cargo van at the intersection of state Routes 219 and 948. Specifics on the crash were unavailable at press time as the Ridgway-based state police had yet to file a public information report.

John D. “Jack” Bowser

John D. “Jack” Bowser, 69, of 312 John Street, St. Marys, died Sunday, August 25, 2013, at the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born December 9, 1943 in Detroit, Mich., son of the late Thomas Bowser and Agnes Schriner Bowser.
He was a graduate of DuBois High School, Class of 1962 and had been a resident of St. Marys since 1991. He retired from the US Air Force in 1984, and was a former employee of American Protective Services and Walmart.
In May of 1993, in DuBois, he married Mary M. Chase, who survives.

District recounts cleanup, eyes trail work

City faces potential violations for failure to adopt ordinance

This week representatives from the City of St. Marys plan to meet with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) regarding the city facing a violation for its failure in adopting or amending its ordinance to fit within the guidelines of the Elk County Stormwater Plan.
