Alberta M. "Birdie" Hoffman

Alberta M. "Birdie" Hoffman, 95, a resident of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of 1032 S. Michael Rd., died on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at the Pinecrest Manor after a lengthy illness.
She was born Apr. 25, 1918 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Anthony and Rose Krieg Emmert.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys Parochial Schools.
On Oct. 29, 1936, in the St. Marys Church, she married Wilfred J. "Biff" Hoffman, who preceded her in death on June 15, 1982.

Commissioners approve tax hike

RIDGWAY – The Elk County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday morning voted to adopt their proposed 2014 budget which includes a one-mill increase, the first hike since 2009.
"We haven't received any comment from any taxpayer," Elk County Commissioner June Sorg said regarding the required 20-day comment period as the budget was displayed at the commissioners' office. "The increase is one mill and that usually brings in about $500,000 to the county, and it will be a $50 increase for a $50,000 assessment (roughly the same as a house with a $100,000 market value)."

Christmas Spectacular Concert set for Sunday

St. Marys Area High School's Carpin Auditorium will be filled with sounds of holiday cheer on Sunday afternoon as the Christmas Spectacular Concert by the Nicholas J. Sinibaldi Concert Band and Choir gets underway at 3 p.m. The roughly hour and a half long concert will feature a variety of holiday music and is free to the public. However, donations will be collected at the door and all proceeds this year will benefit the Crystal Fire Department.

Liquid fuels allocation will not be changed

RIDGWAY – Less than a month after fielding questions regarding liquid fuels funds distribution, county commissioners on Tuesday morning voted in unanimous fashion to keep the current formula as each municipality receives an equal $8,000 share.
"Gary Anderson was here at our last meeting and questioned our liquid fuels disbursements that we appropriate to the municipalities in Elk County," said Elk County Commissioner June Sorg. "We've reviewed the topic and looked at the regulations again, and what we've found is that this is at the discretion of the commissioners.

Lady Crusaders improve to 4-0, beat DCC 72-50

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders raised their record to 4-0 on the season with a 72-50 victory over the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals at the ECCHS gym.

Charles W. Stephenson

December 17, 2013

Charles W. Stephenson, 80, of 807 Allegheny Ave. Oil City, died peacefully at home on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Born Dec. 25, 1932 in Sharon, he was the son of the late George W. Stephenson and I. Marie Henshaw Stephenson.
He graduated from Ridgway High School. A veteran of the United States Army, he was a Corporal serving from March 26, 1953 until March 23, 1955 and had received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Roger Francis Mann

Roger Francis Mann, “Pickle,” 73, of Second Avenue, Johnsonburg, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at home after a short illness.
He was born Feb. 2, 1940 in Ridgway, son of Marlin Francis Mann, deceased, and Vada (Kolonski) Mann, who survives.
On Feb. 22, 1960, he married Catherine Noreen (Glover), who survives.
He worked with many local companies, including Keystone Carbon, Johnsonburg Builders Supply, Johnsonburg Paper Mill, Paper City Transfer, Kwik Fill, and at one time was co-owner of The Cabaret, currently known as the Kopper Kettle.

Helen R. Goetz

Helen R. Goetz, 93, of 548 E. Kaul Ave., St. Marys, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2013 at the Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 8, 1920 in North Fork, daughter of the late Joseph and Cecelia Novosel Skok.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools and Sacred Heart School. She was a former employee of the Stackpole Carbon Company.
On Aug. 17, 1946, in the Sacred Heart Church, she married Richard J. Goetz, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1993.

Council narrowly approves 2014 budget

The City of St. Marys 2014 budget was narrowly passed in a close 4-3 vote by members of St. Marys City Council during their Monday evening meeting. Approving the budget were councilmen Bob Roberts, Dick Dornisch, Greg Gebauer and Dan Hepner while those who voted against it were Mayor Sally Geyer, Ned Jacob and Gary Anderson.

Kane man charged with assaulting woman

A Kane man is charged with allegedly assaulting a woman while she was driving a vehicle early Sunday morning.
Robert William Duck, 35, of 106 Clay St., Kane, also is charged with making terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person, presenting false identification to police, harassment and public drunkenness.
