Advocates for honoring St. Marys native and former NFL player Dan Conners provided their proposals for signage and an exhibit at Dutch Country Stadium during a recent St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors meeting. The board recommended a committee consisting of two board personnel, members of the Quarterback Club and Conners' supporters to meet to further discuss the proposed suggestions.
As an alternative option the group developed their latest proposal. The four changes the group would like to see implemented include three signs and one display/exhibit.
In hopes of peaking the support of former St. Marys Area High School students, Terry Straub proposed creating an SMAHS alumni association during the latest school board meeting.
During his presentation to the board Straub said he volunteered to head up the organizational efforts by acting as the group's executive director for the first two years. This would also entail him to act as liaison between the board and the organization.
RIDGWAY â€“ B94 recently earned the first Awesome Affiliate of the Week award from Dial Global.
According to Dial Global, this is the first Awesome Affiliate of the Week award. In their recent newsletter, Dial Global officials praise Paul Walker and his crew for doing a "fantastic job with their Bud Light Summer Concert Series.
BENEZETTE â€“Â After a hiatus of several years the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Elk Expo will be making a return this weekend in time for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the reintroduction of elk in Pennsylvania. The expo will be held at the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette on Saturday, Aug. 17 and Sunday, Aug. 18.
In preparation of the entrance into kindergarten, 50 students throughout the St. Marys Area School District recently participated in the Dickinson Center, Inc. (DCI) Kindergarten Readiness Program.
The three-week program was open to all incoming kindergarten students enrolled at South St. Marys Street, Fox Township, and Bennetts Valley elementary schools.
There were four different sessions, each being held two days a week for two-and-a-half hours. The program was held at SSMSES.
Carl W. Cook, 80, of 1102 Horner Rd., Wilcox, died Friday morning, August 9, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a brief illness.
He was born July 7, 1933 in Hazelhurst, son of the late Carl R. and Lillian Dippo Cook.
He married Beverly Marlene Johnson on November 20, 1954 in the Wilcox Presbyterian Church, and she survives.
Formerly of James City, he resided in Wilcox since 1958. He graduated from Kane High School and was a member of the Wilcox Presbyterian Church and Wilcox Sportsmen's Club.
Justine Marie Bowser, 35, of Johnsonburg, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013 as the result of an auto accident.
She was born July 23, 1978 in St. Marys, daughter of Robert W. Bowser Sr. and his wife Clara of St. Marys, and Antoinette "Toni" (Hasselman) Jordan and her husband Willis of Johnsonburg.
With the first day of school just over one week away, St. Marys Area School District Superintendent Ann Kearney stressed the importance of attendance in the success of a student's academic career.
"There's a large correlation between academics and attendance," Kearney emphasized. "I really hope the parents and guardians will really take it seriously to make sure the children are here.
Members of the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors voted to table a decision on the high school's track resurfacing project until specs are complete in order to use when they advertise for bid packages.
Terry Straub, SMAHS director of student activities, recapped the project during the Monday evening school board meeting. It entails choosing from two options ranging in costs from $63,000 to $210,000.
A small group of city staff plan to soon meet in order to determine cost cutting measures for the wastewater treatment plant.
This was prompted from a unanimously approved motion by City Council as a way to find answers on how to run the plant more efficiently.
