Janet Rose Shelander

August 8, 2013

Janet Rose Shelander, age 74, of Duffy Apartments, Johnsonburg, died at home Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013 after a brief illness.
She was born June 17, 1939 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Edward and Stella (Kinny) Shelander.
She attended Johnsonburg schools and worked at Stackpole Carbon of Johnsonburg and St. Marys, Elcam, and the Deli of Johnsonburg Market Basket/Jubilee.

SMAHS track resurfacing long overdue

The St. Marys Area High School's Dutch Country Stadium track is several years overdue for new resurfacing according to Terry Straub, SMAHS director of student activities. The cost to resurface the track ranges from $63,000-$210,000 depending on the chosen option.
"It has been 16 years since it has been resurfaced with the general shelf life of this type being 10 to 12 [years], so we're already three to four [years] beyond the maximum shelf life," Straub said.

County residents showcase talents

KERSEY – Cool and rainy weather Thursday evening did not dissuade a number of youngsters from showing off their abilities in the annual talent show at the Elk County Fair.
A total of 12 acts performed in the roughly hour-long event, with participants being divided into three categories: ages nine and under, ages 10-15, and ages 16 and up. Each performer was given a four-minute time limit. No lip syncing or prerecorded vocals were allowed. Additionally, contestants had to be amateurs.

Meter rates set to increase

Those utilizing Market and Brusselles street municipal parking lots will soon be paying more to park. The current meters allow for 2.5 hours for 25 cents, however new meters will decrease the time for the same amount at 1 hour for 25 cents.
Currently meters at the 25 cents per one hour rate are situated on on-street parking, along Depot Street, and the parking garage. The Brusselles and Market Street parking lots are the only two remaining lots where the meters have not been changed to the new rate.

Allen E. "Brownie" Pearsall

Allen E. "Brownie" Pearsall, 79, of Oknefski Road, Ridgway, died Monday, August 5, 2013 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
He was born February 26, 1934, in Castle Garden, the son of the late Arthur H. and Louise Wolfe Pearsall Sr.
Formerly of Emporium, he was a self-employed TV repairman.

Kenneth L. Anderson

Kenneth L. Anderson, 90, of 2323 Edinboro Road, Erie, died on August 7, 2013 at the VA hospital in Erie.
Mr. Anderson was a resident of Springhill Retirement Village for the past two years and for the previous 63 years a resident of Waterford. He had been a long time member of Calvary Covenant Church, and more recently, Waterford Presbyterian and Edinboro United Methodist.
He is a Bronze Star decorated veteran of WWII and is credited, along with one of his fellow soldiers, with capturing 24 German soldiers at one time while serving in combat.

Stream project to be costly endeavor

Initial details about a new stream improvement occurred during Wednesday even in's Fox Township Supervisors meeting. The project is centered around the Gahr Road area, however will eventually encompass an estimated three quarters of a mile of stream.

Clarion River cleanup to take place Aug. 13

RIDGWAY – A cleanup for a roughly nine-mile stretch of the Clarion River spanning from the Main Street bridge in Ridgway to the Portland Mills boat launch is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 13, according to Nick Irwin, an employee at Country Squirrel Outfitters, who came up with the idea for the event.

Karen Louise Plyler

Karen Louise Plyler died peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Thursday, July 25, 2013.
She was the daughter of the late Robert and Agnes Eileen Biank of Nappanee, Ind.
She had lived in Elkhart, Ind. since the spring of 1983. She was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1969.
She loved nature and the outdoors. She enjoyed listening to music and loved to cook. She truly enjoyed the friendships she had made over the years through Faith Mission Home and Oaklawn. She will be forever loved and missed by many.

David J. Mohr

David J. Mohr, 72, a longtime resident of Bloomfield Hills, Mich. and a former resident of Hudson, Ohio, died August 4, 2013.
He was born December 23, 1940 in St. Marys, son of the late Joseph and Susanna Mohr.
He graduated from St. Marys Central Catholic High School in 1958, and attended the University of Pittsburgh.
He enjoyed a loyal career of 49 years as a sales engineer for the Stackpole Carbon Company. He was also a Staff Sergeant in the Army National Guard, and was honorably discharged in January 1968.
