Cloudy skies on Tuesday morning made for slightly cooler and more comfortable temperatures for the roughly 80 youngsters who turned out for Benzinger Park's annual Activity Day.
"It's a comfortable day," said Benzinger Park Director John Schneider. "We don't have to deal with some of the warm temperatures that we had last week."
WEEDVILLE â€“ The deterioration of Mt. Zion Road was discussed recently by Jay Township Supervisors. Shirley Burke, a resident of the road, inquired as to when the hauling by the natural gas producing company EQT, will end in order to cut down on the dust.
Supervisor Jeremy Rippey said EQT is now hauling out the flowback water they trucked in previously.
Event organizers are looking forward to the region's 8th annual Tasting in the Wilds event scheduled for this Saturday, July 27 from 12-7 p.m. at the Ridgway Firemen's Carnival grounds.
The event, which serves as a fundraiser for the Ridgway Heritage Council, is a rain or shine affair; the first year the event took place was 2006 and Abbi Peters, executive director of Elk County Council on the Arts [ECCOTA] and a member of the Ridgway Heritage Council, said the event continues to grow with each passing year.
Through the end of July, Memorial Park staff are seeking submissions for their home video contest. Entries are open to residents of all ages throughout Elk County and the videos can be from any occasion, they simply have to be family friendly and under three minutes in length.
Walter J. Polaski, 83, of Highland View Health Care in Brockway and formerly of Johnsonburg, died Tuesday morning, July 23, 2013 at Highland View Health Care following a lengthy illness.
He was born on Aug. 6, 1929 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Lawrence and Josephine Euken Polaski.
He married Dolores Espin in 1954. She died in October 1998.
Walter resided in Johnsonburg his entire life and graduated from Johnsonburg High School.
He was a member of the Holy Rosary Church, Rolfe Sportsmen's Club. He loved hunting and fishing and was an antiquer.

Theodore J. â€śTeddyâ€ť Sporner, 74, of 418 West Creek Road, St. Marys, died on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at the Pinecrest Manor following a lengthy illness.
He was born Nov. 3, 1938, in St. Marys, son of the late Aloysius B. and Alberta J. Wortman Sporner. He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys Schools. He was a retired employee of PennDOT, retiring in 1998.
Mr. Sporner served in the U.S. Army, serving in Korea during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed working at his sawmill and operating heavy equipment.
Dr. Raj K. Jolly, 62, of 368 Sabula Outing Club Rd., DuBois, died on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Christ the King Manor in DuBois following a short illness.
He was born Jan. 13, 1951 in New Delhi, India, a son of the late Yagya Datta and Savitri Jolly.
In 1975 in New Delhi, India, he married Anju Jolly, who survives.
Mary Auman Durling, 89, a resident of Asbury Heights in Pittsburgh, died peacefully on July 12, 2013 after enduring theÂ debilitating effects ofÂ dementia.
She was born in Kersey,Â daughter of the late George and Anna Leismeister Auman.
Mary was a longtime resident of Pittsburgh and was a graduate of the St. Francis Nursing School, the United States Cadet Nursing Corps. Mary retired from the former St. Francis Hospital where she was the nursing administrator and worked for 50 years at St. Francis and remains a St. Francis alumnus.
Charles J. Cuneo, 66, of 116 Hemlock Road, St. Marys, died Sunday, July 21, 2013, at the DuBois Nursing Home.
He was born Aug. 26, 1946 in Ridgway, son of the late Joseph and Margaret Lee Cuneo.
He was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a graduate of St. Marys Public High School, Class of 1964 and also attended Jeff Tech. He was a retired employee of SGL Carbon Company, retiring in 1998.
On Aug. 14, 1976 in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Catherine M. Marconi, who survives.
