This weekend students of April School of Dance will take to the stage to showcase their year-long efforts as part of the school's annual recital, "Color Me Dance," taking place on Friday and Saturday evening at St. Marys Area High School auditorium.
A Memorial Mass for Charles M. O'Connor, who died on February 14, 2013, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 15 at Sacred Heart Church with Fr. Eric Vogt, OSB, officiating.
A private interment will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Kane.
RIDGWAY â€“ A new, $6 million senior housing complex is in the works for Ridgway, funded in large part by a federal tax credit designed to offset the diminishing effects of Marcellus Shale activity on affordable housing statewide. With Pittsburgh-based real estate development company TREK behind the venture, Project Manager Trey Barbour announced during Tuesday's meeting of the Elk County Board of Commissioners his company's plans to begin construction by year's end, with the undertaking expected to last between 10 and 12 months.
ST. MARYS â€“ At 6 p.m. on Tuesday evening, police and tactical officers poured into Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys in response to reports of a man with a gun and eight shot inside a wing of the hospital. It was all part of ERHC's emergency preparedness drill, part of ongoing efforts to bolster procedures in the event of an actual emergency.
The 4th Annual Kick the Crap Out of MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Outhouse Race is set to take over Market Street in downtown St. Marys on Saturday afternoon. Entries are being accepted until the day of the event and there is a cost to enter. From 2-7 p.m., spectators can watch as outhouses on wheels race down the street to claim the top prize. Registration begins at 2 p.m. with a rules meeting to follow at 2:30 p.m., a parade of outhouses at 2:45 p.m. and races starting at 3 p.m.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch played strong defensively on Monday afternoon, but it was not enough as the squad came up short 2-0 to the Greensburg Salem Golden Lions in a PIAA Class AAA opening round game played at Hampton High School.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team saw their season come to an end on Monday afternoon as the squad dropped a 9-1 contest to the Neshannock Lancers in a PIAA Class A opening round game played at Hampton High School.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team saw their season come to an end Monday afternoon at McKinley Field in Brookville where they lost an 8-0 game to the California Trojans in the opening round of the PIAA Class A baseball tournament.
Marilyn Schatz, 59, of Shaffers Crossing, Colo., passed away May 31, 2013 after an eight year battle with brain cancer.
Marilyn was born and raised in St. Mary to Gerard and Verna Eckert and attended the St. Marys Parochial School, Catholic middle school and high school until she moved to Massillon, Ohio at age 16, where she lived with her sister and attended Washington High School.Â
Marigold S. Nelson, 68, of 102 Center St., Ridgway, died Sunday, June 2, 2013, at home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born March 10, 1945, in Concord, New Hampshire, the daughter of Harry and Shirley Woodworth Brown.
On July 1, 1967, she married John Nelson, he survives.
