Lady Crusaders reach 9-A title game with 5-2 victory over Smethport

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team reached the championship game of the District 9 Class A softball tournament by defeating the Smethport Lady Hubbers by a 5-2 score in a game played at the Brockway Area High School.

Grace P. Cassady, 85, of Elk Haven Nursing Home, St. Marys, and formerly of 131 W. Condot Road, St. Marys, died on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
She was born Feb. 10, 1928 in Ridgway, a daughter of the late Charles and Anna Abplanalp Shilk.
On Sept. 5, 1947 in Cornell, N.Y., she married the late Norbert W. Cassady.

Screening held of "Our Town: St Marys"; set to air June 6

Health care coverage for township employees put to a vote

JAY TWP. – On Wednesday, Jay Township Supervisors approved a new health care package for the township's six employees that will cost the municipality roughly $4,000 less a year, but still exceeds their budgeted amount by about $6,000.

Illegal drugs seized in Emporium incidents

EMPORIUM – The Pa. State Police and Emporium Borough Police report seizing "numerous illegal drugs" in their search of a residence at a 349 East 5th St., on Wednesday.
According to police, criminal charges are pending.

City garage/yard sales regulations

The City of St. Marys would like to remind residents that the city's zoning ordinance of 2005 contains the following regulations which pertain to garage and/or yard sales. Garage and/or yard sales are permitted within any zoning district and an owner and/or occupants may conduct up to four garage/yard sales per year

Council discusses drilling awareness and transit center

During a recent St. Marys City Council meeting the group discussed the importance of staying aware of Marcellus Shale activity.
"This is something I don't think that council can ever escape the responsibility and pay very close attention to what's going on in this industry," said Councilman Dick Dornisch who introduced the topic at the meeting.

RIDGWAY – A Jay Township man that police said "had taken refuge in Benezette" while on the run from midwestern authorities has been returned to Ohio to face felony charges against him there.

John J. Stubber Jr., 56, of Hopewell Township, died suddenly on Saturday, May 25, 2013 in his Aliquippa home.
He was born and raised in St. Marys, son of the late John and Mary Stubber.
He retired from the Air Force, where he served for six years in active duty and 20 years with the reserves.
He was currently employed at the 911 Tactical Airlift Wing in Coraopolis. He was an avid sports fan, and loved watching hockey, football, and golf. He was a family man and enjoyed the love and companionship of his family, and his most special pet, his dog Chloe.
