Local runners add to state title collections

Adair Gennocro and Kennedy Weisner were once again welcomed home by the sound of sirens on Saturday evening as the duo enjoyed a fire truck ride through town in a parade of emergency response vehicles to celebrate their latest additions to their state championship collections.

Memorial Day activities honor veterans

For the 131st consecutive year St. Marys held its annual Memorial Day festivities on Monday morning, a tradition that master of ceremonies retired USAF Lieutenant Colonel Victor Straub noted dates back to 1882 in the community.

Memorial for Korean War veterans dedicated

JAY TWP. – A memorial for all of the veterans of the Bennetts Valley area who fought in the Korean War was dedicated during Memorial Day celebrations at Mt. Zion Historical Park on Saturday afternoon.

Student speakers share advice at ECCHS commencement

The ideas of not being deterred by fears and doubts and working hard to achieve one’s goals were some of the messages Elk County Catholic High School’s 66 new graduates were able to take away from Sunday afternoon’s commencement exercises. This advice was given to the graduates by their peers: valedictorian Morgan Onink and salutatorian Daniel Millsop.

Richard Marcel Smith

Richard Marcel Smith, 77, of Bridge Street, Johnsonburg, died suddenly at home Friday, May 24, 2013.
He was born on December 30, 1935 in Kane, the son of Dewey Marcel and Linda Wilhelmina (Anderson) Smith.  
On June 14, 1958, he married Gwendolyn Preston Smith, who preceded him in death on March 28, 2010.

Alice Marie Magistrelli

Alice Marie Magistrelli, 100, a resident of Elk Haven and formerly of 414 Rock St., St. Marys, died Friday, May 24, 2013 at the Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born May 31, 1912, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Ben and Mary Goetz Wortman.
On June 8, 1937, in Avonmore, she married Guido Magistrelli and he preceded her in death on July 26, 1988.

Joshua D. "Josh" Erich

Joshua D. "Josh" Erich, 22, of 527 Memory Court, Girard and formerly of St. Marys, died Saturday, May 25, 2013 in Girard as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
He was born November 18, 1990 in St. Marys, son of David Erich of St. Marys and Renee Glover Ando of Buffalo, N.Y.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of the St. Marys Area High School, Class of 2009. He had also graduated from Triangle Tech in Erie. He was employed as a Specialty Maintenance Electrician at F&S Tool in Erie.

Georgia Elizabeth (Smith) Sweeney

Georgia Elizabeth (Smith) Sweeney, 88, died Monday, May 20, 2013 after a short illness.
She was born July 1, 1924 to George and Theresa Smith in St. Marys.
She attended the local Catholic School and graduated in 1930.
She spent her life raising five children and worked for a few years as a nurse’s aide at the St. Marys Hospital. She and her husband, Gene moved to Dutch Flat, Calif. in 1984 and moved to Colorado in 2000 to be near their daughter, Edie.

Richard Marcel Smith

Richard Marcel Smith, 77, of Bridge Street, Johnsonburg, died suddenly Friday, May 24, 2013, at home.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 28, 2013 from 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, May 29, 2013 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., and Thursday, May 30, 2013 from 10-11 a.m. at the Ubel Funeral Home, Johnsonburg.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Ubel Funeral Home, Johnsonburg, with Pastor Stephen Fair.

Gun pulled on cops in high speed chase

ST. MARYS – A St. Marys man is imprisoned for allegedly pulling a gun on police after leading them on a high speed chase while driving under the influence of alcohol.
Michael John Detsch, 32, of 105 Rocky Top Drive, St. Marys, is charged with assault, reckless endangerment, DUI and related offenses after he reportedly attempted to outrun police when stopped for speeding and pointed a gun at his pursuing officers.
