Financial woes facing North Central

RIDGWAY – The North Central Regional Planning Development Commission is holding just over $5 million in total assets, a nearly $2 million dollar drop from last year, with expenses over $7 million and liabilities over $6 million. This according to a state audit of the organization's financial records dated March 22.
North Central distributes government grant monies to communities, industry, economic growth, workforce quality, and business opportunity in the six counties they serve.

3 Kane residents die in traffic accident

Three Kane residents were killed in a two-vehicle crash late Thursday night near the intersection of Routes 66 and 948 in Highland Township.
Ridgway-based State Police identified the victims as:
*Robert D. "Rob" Higginbotham, 33.
*Clyde W. Nelson II, 33.
*Delores L. Woodall, 36.
Elk County Coroner Michelle Muccio of St. Marys pronounced Higginbotham and Nelson dead at the scene. 
Police said Woodall died at Kane Community Hospital less than an hour after the accident.

Clyde "Punky" Nelson III

Clyde "Punky" Nelson III, 33, of 427 Biddle Street, Kane, died Thursday evening (May 23, 2013) of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near the intersection of Route 66 and Route 948 in Highland Township.
He was born June 15, 1979, in Kane, a son of Clyde and Joyce Robinson Nelson.
Mr. Nelson was employed by ITL on Montmorenci. He was a member of the Ridgway Loyal Order of the Moose and a former member of the Kane Moose #130.

Motorcycle safety classes now offered in St. Marys

Motorcycle enthusiasts now have the option of taking the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program's Basic Rider Course (BRC) and Basic Rider Course 2 (BRC2) in St. Marys as Elk County Catholic High School was recently added to the list of the state's training sites. There is no cost for the program, and motorcycles and helmets are provided for those enrolled in the BRC.
According to Josh Burrs, ECC site coordinator, the addition of the school as a training site came about after Burrs began looking for a potential site closer to the area.

Marian T. Mertz, 85, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of Elk Towers, died Thursday evening, May 23, 2013, at Elk Haven after a lengthy illness.
She was born on January 2, 1928 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Norbert Lecker, who died in 1985, and Caroline Hassennetter Lecker, who died in 1993.
On November 26, 1949 in the St. Mary’s Church, she married Harold G. “Dutchie” Mertz, who preceded her in death on May 4, 1990.

Crusader baseball advances with 6-3 win over Elkers

Things got off to a shaky start for the Elk County Catholic Crusaders on Thursday afternoon as they gave up two runs in the top of the first inning to the Ridgway Elkers, but ECC was eventually able to take the lead and fend off an attempted rally by the Elkers to come away with a 6-3 victory in the District 9 Class A quarterfinal contest at Berwind Park.

Fatalities in Highland Twp. crash

HIGHLAND TWP. – Two victims reportedly died late Thursday night in a two-vehicle crash between an automobile and a water truck, according to unconfirmed scanner reports.
The crash reportedly occurred shortly after 9 p.m. at the intersection of state Routes 66 and 948 in Highland Township.

Korean War veterans' dedication to take place Saturday

On Saturday, May 25 at 1 p.m., the Mt. Zion Historical Society, in conjunction with the Valley Legion Post 978, will dedicate a memorial in the Mt. Zion Historical Park honoring and remembering 165 Korean veterans from Jay and Benezette Townships.
