Dutch wrestlers win District 9-AAA team championship

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling team captured the District 9 Class AAA team championship Saturday afternoon by defeating the Clearfield Bison by a 51-15 score. The championships were held at the DuBois Area High School.

SMA swim teams sweep Brookville squads Thursday

The St. Marys Area swim teams swept the Brookville squads in a meet held Thursday evening at the SMAHS Natatorium.
The Lady Dutch defeated the Lady Raiders 142-34 while the Dutchmen downed the Raiders 114-42.

Altoona gymnasts defeat St. Marys Area Saturday

The St. Marys Area gymnastics team closed out their regular season with a loss to the visiting Altoona squad on Saturday in a meet held at the St. Marys Area Middle School by a score of 128.8-123.175.

James B. "Mally" Mallison

February 2, 2014

James B. "Mally" Mallison, 84, of 162 S. Paul Rd., St. Marys, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at his residence.
He was born June 9, 1929, in St. Marys, son of the late Bernard "Barney" and Florence Geeck Mallison. On Aug. 24, 1957, in the St. Mary's Church, he married Mary R. Reuscher, and she survives.

Marie T. DeGroat

Marie T. DeGroat, 84, of Grant Road, Ridgway, died Jan. 30, 2014, at Ridgmont Assisted Living Facility.
She was born March 18, 1929, in Ridgway, the daughter of the late Robert DeGroat and Irene Moore.
She was a lifelong Ridgway resident.
She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and the St. John of God Society. She had been employed at Alltel for 42 years, retiring in 1991.

Wanda M. (Woodring) Biss

Wanda M. (Woodring) Biss, 74, of Loop Road, Marion Center, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014 at the Hillsdale Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.
Wanda was born Dec. 12, 1939 in St. Marys, daughter of Rexford Jessie Woodring and Nila (Beldin) Woodring Smith, both of whom preceded her in death.
She attended Benezette School and was a member of the United Free Methodist Church of Marion Center. She worked at Inter Electric Company of Warren. She enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Beimel shares info on grave markers, chapel

When entering St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery though the entrance nearest the chapel, one of the first graves one sees belongs to a Smith. 
"I can't quite explain that," said local historian Ray Beimel, remarking on the irony given the strong German history of the community. 
Beimel provided attendees on a tour of the facility with several interesting facts related to the cemetery in addition to pointing out the Smith grave. 
One of the first things he explained was why a number of the graves throughout the cemetery are in disrepair.

The Elk County Catholic Crusader basketball team used a strong second half to defeat the Punxsutawney Chucks by a 63-42 score Friday night in a District 9 League game played at the ECCHS gym.
