A part of Sunday's Community Celebration honoring the Benedictine Sisters of Elk County is a detailed program featuring a listing of each of the 281 sisters who served at St. Joseph Monastery throughout its 162-year history.
Those attending the service will receive a small 15-page program complete with vespers service details, program information and listings of each sister who served in St. Marys, their date of birth and death if applicable, locations of where they transferred and additional monastery information.
Samantha Beaver Family Child Care, a child care facility run by Samantha Beaver, 27, of Ridgway, recently opened its doors in November of 2013. She operates the facility in conjunction with Darlene Beaver, who has over 35 years in childcare experience and is currently in the process of attaining an associates degree in child development.
Arthur E. Meyer, 84, of 1122 South Michael Rd., St. Marys, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born April 6, 1929 in St. Marys, son of the late George and Julia Salter Meyer Sr. He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools. He was a retired employee of the Stackpole Carbon Company, retiring in 1992 with over 40 years of service.
On July 30, 1949, in St. Marys, he married Dorothy â€śJeanâ€ť Zimmett, she preceded him in death on Feb. 20, 2005.
The Crystal Fire Department continues to maintain a superior level of fire protection for residents of St. Marys as well as outlying areas as reported by Fire Chief Bill Kraus during a recent St. Marys City Council meeting.
The overall average response time for incidents last year was just over six minutes, with their quickest responses being five minutes, This indicates the time from pager activation until the first unit's arrival on scene.
WEEDVILLE â€“ A new outdoor furnace ordinance for Jay Township will be advertised this month.
The previously drafted ordinance had been amended to state that an outdoor furnace must be 50 feet from any property line and 300 feet from any residence not served by the outdoor ordinance.
Bus No. 99 encountered icy roadways on Thursday, at approximately 8 a.m., as it attempted to travel its regular route on East Condot Road in St. Marys. Observers report that as the bus crested the hill it began to slide down the road backwards eventually spinning perpendicular, blocking the road. The front end of the bus was stopped by a snow bank on the edge of a resident's front yard, narrowly missing a mailbox. The back end of the bus traveled off the road, lodging in a small wooded area.
David John Kronenwetter, 53, of Flowery Branch, Ga., formerly of St. Marys, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.
He had been battling with a terrible disease, ALS otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, which he was diagnosed with in September 2009.
David and his wife, Risa, met and fell in love in 1992 and married in November 1997, and Risa truly believed they one day would celebrate their 50th anniversary, but ALS stole that time from them.
St. Marys City Council approved for City Manager Dave Greene and Solicitor Tom Wagner to represent the city during upcoming contract negotiations with Zito Media. A new contract between the two entities will begin in January 2015.
"It will take about a year to get negotiations together," Greene said.
Greene said the company recently ran new cables in a recent effort to improve the cable television reception at City Hall.
The City of St. Marys has declared Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014 as "Honoring the Benedictine Sisters of St. Joseph Monastery Day."
The proclamation, approved by members of City Council, reads that "in celebration of their presence in our community, their significant contributions, their prayerful witness, and their encouragement to our citizenry on the pilgrim journey."
Pearle A. Meredith, 94, of 1274 Montmorenci Rd., died Monday, Feb. 17, 2014 at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born Dec. 13, 1919, in Ridgway, daughter of the late Charles and Selma Nelson Holm. On June 22, 1945, she married Glenn R. Meredith who preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 1995.
