The legacy of a St. Marys dentist, the late Dr. Philip DaMore, continues in Honduras with the recent founding of a dental clinic in Honduras in his name.
The clinic was established by the Rice Foundation with dental equipment donated by Dr. DaMore following his retirement.
Last year marked the most prom gowns collected from area residents as part of an effort to ensure a group of disadvantaged Kentucky teens could attend their school proms.
According to Laura Kuntz, a St. Marys Catholic Elementary School teacher and project organizer, said she distributed 102 dresses, 43 pairs of shoes and various accessories such as purses and jewelry.
Kuntz is currently collecting gowns, dresses, shoes and accessories which she plans to hand-deliver to Beatyville, Ky., a deeply poverty-stricken area, toward the end of March as their prom takes place at the end of April.
Any area residents who have considered combining their love of books and baking are in luck, as the St. Marys Pubic Library will be holding an Edible Book Contest open to amateur bakers of any age on Saturday, March 22 at 2 p.m.
"We're encouraging people to take a favorite book and turn it into a visual cake," said St. Marys Public Library Director Leslie Swope.
Using a cake or cupcakes, individuals are challenged to be imaginative and create a cake depicting a scene, character, or overall theme from a book.
