ECCHS seeking host families for international students

As Elk County Catholic High School prepares to welcome a small group of Chinese students for the 2014-15 school year as part of its International Students Program, the school is seeking to meet with those interested in becoming host families.
Local families would host students in their homes for 10 months beginning in mid-August through the end of the school year. A $5,000 stipend is being offered to each family to compensate for meals, boarding, utilities, and transportation.

SGL Warriors holding comedy show to benefit Relay for Life

The SGL Warriors Relay for Life team will be holding their 11th semi-annual comedy show, LOL Stand Up Comedy Show, on Saturday, March 29 at the Edgewood Hall. Doors for the event open at 6 p.m. and the show, which will feature three comedians, will begin around 8 p.m. The funds raised through the event, which also features various giveaways, are credited to the team's total, but all of the money goes toward the total for the Elk County Relay for Life.
Bill Babik, captain of the SGL Warriors, indicated that all three comedians for the show are from Ohio.

McKay seeks reduced sentence

March 21, 2014

RIDGWAY – Former Ridgway Volunteer Fire Department treasurer Phillip McKay Jr., 61, will reportedly be seeking a reduced sentence for punishments stemming from a November conviction of device access fraud. Upon conviction, McKay was sentenced to five years probation and $10,698.43 in restitution payments.

Sophia E. "Betty" Kuntz

Sophia E. "Betty" Kuntz, 90, of 584 Church St., St. Marys, died Friday, March 21, 2014 at the Newhaven Court in Greensburg.
She was born Aug. 23, 1923 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Nicholas and Irene Wilhelm Fritz. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1941. She was a former employee of the Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. in St. Marys.
On July 3, 1948, in the Sacred Heart Church, she married John E. Kuntz and he preceded her in death on May 30, 2008.

ECCHS honors winter sports athletes

March 21, 2014

Elk County Catholic High School held its annual Winter Athletic Awards Program on Wednesday evening, with the event getting underway at 7 p.m. in the school's auditorium.
The program got underway with an invocation by Fr. Ross Miceli followed by a brief address by Athletic Association President John Dippold and several acknowledgements by Athletic Director Aaron Straub, who also served as the master of ceremonies for the event.
