Teresa A. Ferragine

Teresa A. Ferragine, 74, of 185 Center St., Elk Towers, St. Marys, died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Penn Highlands Elk.
She was born Feb. 2, 1940 in Elmhurst, N.Y., daughter of the late John and Catherine Moriarty Becce. She was a graduate of Flushing High School, Class of 1958. She had been a resident of St. Marys since 1972 and was a former employee of the American Red Cross.
Mrs. Ferragine was a member of the Good Shepard Lutheran Church.

Major crash shuts down Boot Jack

RIDGWAY TWP. – A multi-vehicle crash Wednesday morning shut down state Route 219 for over two and a half hours after a head-on collision with a loaded coal truck spilled debris over the two-lane roadway near 15926 Boot Jack Road (SR 219) in Ridgway Township.
Ridgway Ambulance and Elk Company 4 (Ridgway Fire Department) were called out at 11:12 a.m. for a report of an overturned coal truck in a head-on collision.

Beloved orphan "Annie" melts hearts in SMA musical

The sun will come out tomorrow for the cast of "Annie" as the St. Marys Area High School Music and Theatre Departments present the popular broadway musical opening tonight with additional performances on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. in the school's Carpin Auditorium.
Tickets are available at the door.
"We thought it was time to bring back a classic, familiar musical that everybody can enjoy," said Christopher Gankosky, musical director. "This year you will find that it is a fresh take on a popular musical and you will be entertained from the first downbeat to the closing curtain."

Eraldo "Hoss" Scacchitti

Eraldo "Hoss" Scacchitti, 56, of 649 Downing Ct., Erie, and formerly of St. Marys, died unexpectedly Monday, March 17, 2014 at the UPMC Hamot Hospital in Erie.
He was born June 28, 1957 in St. Marys, son of Gustavo (Gino) and Menina (Minnie) DeLuca Scacchitti.
He was a graduate of Elk County Catholic High School, Class of 1975, a graduate of Gannon University in 1979, and received his master's degree from Gannon University in 1982. He was employed by Gannon University. He was a proud member of the TKE fraternity and enjoyed crossword puzzles and texting.

Robert J. Foster

Robert J. Foster, 69, of 124 Lafayette St., St. Marys, died Monday, March 17, 2014 at the Penn Highlands Elk Hospital.
He was born Feb. 15, 1945 in St. Marys, son of the late George J. and Helen Beimel Foster. On Feb. 14, 1970, in the St. Mary's Church, he married Mary L. Simbeck, who survives.

City to apply for Early Intervention Program

St. Marys City Council unanimously approved for the city to apply for the Pa. Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Early Intervention Program (EIP).
The program provides matching grant funds to assist municipalities experiencing fiscal difficulties to develop comprehensive multi-year financial plans and establish short and long-term financial objectives.
It offers up to $100,000 for 50 percent of total project costs for the development and implementation of multi-year financial management programs and strategies.

Biblical musical brings gospel parables to life

St. Marys Catholic Middle School students are set to perform the energetic, uplifting musical "Godspell, Jr." in which the parables of Jesus Christ come to life with abundant humanity and heart. Showtime is Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Elk County Catholic High School auditorium.

Mattiuz highlights legislative issues for farm bureau

RIDGWAY – Ernest Mattiuz Jr. of Kersey, elected to the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau's board of directors in late 2013, presented a spring legislative update Tuesday morning during an Elk County Board of Commissioners meeting.
The bureau designates the second week of March on an annual basis as local government affairs week. The presentation sought to inform elected officials of current legislative issues currently being addressed by the state farm bureau.

Vincent N. "Vinny" Scarano

Vincent N. "Vinny" Scarano, 50, of 623 Suismon Ave., Pittsburgh, and formerly of Johnsonburg, died early Sunday morning, March 16, 2014 at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh following a brief illness.
He was born on Aug. 24, 1963 in Ridgway, son of Julia Robinson Scarano and the late Nicholas Scarano.
He resided in Pittsburgh for the last 20 years.
He graduated from Johnsonburg Area High School in 1981. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg. He had worked at Treasure Lake in DuBois as a Time Share salesman. He had also worked for ZEP Cleaning Products.

City Hall security project approved

The second floor of City Hall will be undergoing security modifications in the near future as members of St. Marys City Council approved a $15,000 project on Monday evening during their regular meeting.
The project entails installing a glass wall upon entering the lobby area which would limit access to the entire floor without first being buzzed in by an employee. A new access and camera system will also be incorporated in the project.
