Members of the St. Marys Area High School Class of 2014 capped off their high school career on Friday evening during the school's 118th annual commencement program.
Class President Rebekah Caretti acted as the Mistress of Ceremonies as she greeted her fellow graduates along with family, friends, and school administrators and school board members. She also introduced the evening's student speakers, Salutatorian Catherine Riddle and Valedictorian Amy Orr.
The Community Nurses' Used Book Sale For Hospice will be held at a new location this year: St. Boniface School, which is located along Main Street in Kersey. This year's sale will be held from Thursday, June 5 through Sunday, June 8.
According to Ann Bauer, who is co-coordinating this year's event along with Denise Kneidel, explained that the change in the location of the sale was necessitated after the St. Marys Catholic Middle School moved from its former location along Church Street into the Elk County Catholic High School building.
Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-Brockway) said Friday that Governor Tom Corbett has requested a disaster declaration for areas in Elk County impacted by flooding last week.
"[Corbett] has sent a letter to the United States Small Business Administration to request a disaster declaration," Scarnati said. "This disaster declaration would enable residents and business owners with property damaged by the massive rains to be eligible for low interest loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Mary Virginia â€śGinnyâ€ť (Cochrane) Caldwell, 74, of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. died Saturday, May 24, 2014 at Halifax Regional Medical in Roanoke Rapids after an illness of the past several months.
She was born in Clearfield on Sept. 7, 1939 to the late Harry and Mary (Shannon) Cochrane.
In 1947 the family moved to St. Mary where Ginny attended the Sacred Heart Grade School and graduated from the St. Marys Central High School in 1957.
In 1958 she married Alfred Caldwell of Johnsonburg who preceded her in death.
Luke G. Zitzler, 83, died after lunch on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at Elk Haven. He was a lifelong resident of Vine Road in St. Marys.
He was born July 12, 1930 in St. Marys, son of Joseph and Leona (Hallermeyer) Ziztler. He married Mary Grace Schlimm, who survives, on Aug. 21, 1954.
