It took almost two and a half hours, but Alan Brennen of Elk County Catholic captured the District 9 Class AA singles tennis championship by defeating his teammate Drew Meyer in three sets.
Meyer won the first set by a 6-4 score. Brennen came back to knot the match at one-all by winning the second set 6-3. The two battled in the third set with Brennen coming out on top by a 7-5 score.
It may have taken a few days longer than originally scheduled, but the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch and Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders finally faced off in the championship game of the Elk County Softball Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field. It was certainly worth the wait too as both teams put in a good showing and needed to go to extra innings before the Lady Dutch walked off for a 3-2 victory in the bottom of the eighth.
Prom season kicks off Saturday evening and St. Marys Area High School is sending a strong message to students about the dangers of drunk driving to ensure they return on Monday.
Making young drivers aware of such dangers was the goal of Tuesday afternoon's
mock crash demonstration as part of the school's Prom Promise program.
During a work session of the Ridgway Area School Board of Directors held Tuesday evening, RASD superintendent Dr. Michael O'Brien announced his resignation from the position, effective Aug. 8 of this year.
O'Brien has reportedly been offered a position in another district, although the name of the district is yet to be announced.
"I've been offered another superintendency and have accepted the superintendency although it's not official until the board accepts it," O'Brien said.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team raised their record to 7-4 on the season with a 12-3 victory over the Johnsonburg Ramettes Monday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
The Elk County Catholic Crusaders remain perfect with a 13-0 record, but the Johnsonburg Rams gave them a run for their money on Monday afternoon in a close game at Berwind Park that saw ECC edge Johnsonburg 4-3.
