Michael L. Vanatta, 69, of 2678 Pine Grove Rd., Pennsylvania Furnace, formerly of Johnsonburg, died Thursday, May 8, 2014 at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 11, 1944 in Ridgway, son of the late Hall Dean and Alice Smith Vanatta.
On June 1, 1958 in St. Leo Magnus Church, Ridgway, he married Linda Hannold, and she survives.
He resided in the State College area since 1991 and graduated from the Johnsonburg High School in 1962. He graduated from Penn State University with a degree in electrical engineering in 1990.
John Geci Jr., 87, of Morton, died on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family.
John was the husband of the late Elsie L. Schroeder Geci.
He was a WWII Navy veteran and lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #113.
RIDGWAY â€“ The trial concluded Friday with a not guilty verdict for the three defendants charged in an armed robbery of a Johnsonburg home.
James Holding, 29, Angela Lynn Baker Williams, 34, and Kevin P. Williams, 36, all of Johnsonburg, were charged with robbery, theft by unlawful taking, reckless endangerment and terroristic threats. All three were found not guilty on all counts.
The Elk County Catholic School System concluded their annual Race for Education on Friday with a program for all of the system's students at Elk County Catholic High School on Friday. Students took part in a number of activities, learned how much money was raised through the event, and joined together for an hour-long walk around the school and adjacent properties.
Race for Education co-coordinators Mary Lynn Carnovale and Bonnie Pearson hosted the announcement of the results and also awarded prizes to some of the top student fundraisers.
The Johnsonburg girls track and field team and St. Marys boys track and field team won team championships at the Elk County Track and Field Meet held Thursday afternoon at Johnsonburg Area High School.
The Johnsonburg girls won the county meet team championship for the first time in head coach Rene Wenner's six-year tenure. Johnsonburg finished with 79.5 team points while Elk County Catholic was second at 67.5 team points. St. Marys was third at 42 points.
It has been a busy week for the Elk County Catholic Crusader tennis team, and the squad added another pair of victories on Thursday as they hosted Bradford and St. Marys Area in back-to-back matches at Benzinger and Memorial Parks. ECC beat Bradford 7-2 and St. Marys Area 8-1.
