Richard E. "Lardy" Friedl

Richard E. "Lardy" Friedl, 84, of 104 West Theresia Rd., St. Marys, died on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following injuries suffered from a car accident.
He was born on Dec. 24, 1929, a son of the late Frank and Clara Zwack Friedl.

PEMA team assesses flood damage

RIDGWAY – Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency [PEMA] officials were in the area Thursday to assess the damage from Wednesday's flooding that ravaged Elk County, particularly Ridgway where standing water in some areas reached well over four feet.
Detailed numbers regarding home and business damage, and monetary damages were not readily available Thursday evening as PEMA teams were still analyzing data at the county's 911 Center.
Mike McAllister, director of Elk County's Office of Emergency Services, said teams were still working Thursday evening to assess the damage.

New torch marks Olympic legacy

n keeping with tradition South St. Marys Street Elementary introduced a torch relay as part of the school's annual Olympic Games.
After hearing about the new idea, Todd and Kim Taylor, longtime Olympic volunteers, decided to expand on the idea and create a real torch for the games.
"We wanted to do something special for the school and for the Olympics," Todd said.
With the help of his co-workers at Quala-Die, a group of about eight people churned the aluminum and brass torch out in six hours.

Resch to serve as parade grand marshal

This year's Memorial Day parade grand marshal will be WWII veteran Francis (Buzzy) Resch. He was born in 1923, grew up in the area and attended Central Catholic High School, quitting after the 10th grade. He entered the U.S. Army on April 12, 1943, and attended Boot Camp in Fort Bliss, Texas.
He was sent overseas and was in the third wave when he landed on Normandy beaches on June 9, 1944.

St. Marys Area honors spring sports athletes

The St. Marys Area High School held its Spring Sports Awards Program Tuesday evening at the Carpin Auditorium.
Those student/athletes participating in boys and girls track and field, baseball, softball and boys tennis were recognized.

Severe flooding damages Elk County

Torrential downpours overnight throughout Elk County closed or washed out several roadways, and damaged several vehicles and structures throughout Wednesday.
"This was a quick storm with a lot of water in a short period of time," said Mike McAllister, Elk County Emergency Services director. "We had a number of incidents countywide, from Highland Township to Jay Township, and in between, but Ridgway Borough really took the brunt of it."

American flags placed in St. Marys' cemeteries

Despite the inclement weather early in the day on Wednesday, members of the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail and volunteers from throughout the community gathered at the Catholic and Protestant cemeteries in the late afternoon to place flags in markers located next to the headstones of deceased members of the armed forces.
Tom Price, Sergeant-in-Charge of the Detail, remarked that postponing the event was never considered and that it would have taken place as scheduled regardless of the weather.

St. Marys man charged in assault

On Tuesday morning, Kayla Gillen began to send her mother text messages saying that she was in trouble and afraid to leave the apartment where she was staying, according to court records. The text messages reported that Aaron Christopher Johnson, 27, of 436 N. St. Marys St., Apt. 1, had pushed her and smashed several items.

Timothy John Sorg

Timothy John Sorg, 63, of Oak Manor One, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Penn Highlands Elk after a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 28, 1950 in St. Marys, son of the late Leonard George and Rita Krellner Sorg. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Our Lady Special School in the St. Joseph’s Monastery.

Daniel Mark Titchner, 35, died unexpectedly on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at his father's house.
He was born Nov. 23, 1978, and graduated from St. Marys Area High School.
