Lady Dutch softball advances with 5-4 win over Mars

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch advanced to the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class AAA tournament with a 5-4 victory over the Mars Fightin' Planets Monday afternoon at the Brockway Area High School field. Mars was the District 7 runner-up.

Crusaders hold on for 3-2 win over Sewickley Academy

It might not have been pretty, but the Elk County Catholic Crusaders kept their undefeated season alive with a 3-2 victory over Sewickley Academy on Mondzay afternoon to advance to the PIAA Class A quarterfinals.

Council tackles range of topics at work session

St. Marys City Council members discussed a variety of issues during their Monday evening work session. Among the topics of concern were smoke testing of the sanitary sewer lines, parking legislation, the city's stormwater management plan and more.
Councilman Ned Jacob encouraged residents to attend the July council meeting when council plans to vote on the ordinance so they may offer their comments on the topic.
"This is going to affect everyone in St. Marys," Jacob said.
Councilman Greg Gebauer added that citizens both in favor and opposed to the ordinance should attend the meeting.

Act 13 Shale disbursement figures released

Elk County and its 12 municipalities will benefit from over $1 million in funding from Act 13 Marcellus Shale Impact Fees and greenways funding.
At the county level, the impact fees distributed totals $350,665.54 along with greenways funding totaling $30,233.25.
The county commissioners in early May announced the establishment of a grant program designed for the redistribution of a portion of their allocation of the Act 13 Marcellus Shale Impact Fee for local projects.

St. Marys Community Pool staff holds emergency training

Lifeguards at the St. Marys Community Pool lingered after the facility had closed for the day on Sunday evening to take part in their annual emergency inservice training. Aided by EMTs from the St. Marys Area Ambulance Association, lifeguards took turns at three different stations set up around the pool to brush up on back-boarding protocol and CPR techniques.
