Locked in a tight game Sunday night, the Wilcox American Legion baseball team loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth inning but came up empty while facing a one-run deficit against Fox Township.
Ben MacDonald wouldn't let his team make the same mistake twice.
With the bases loaded with two outs in the home half of the seventh, MacDonald smacked a Caleb Bennett offering into left center field to score pinch runner Jacob Zimmerman and Cole Peterson for the 4-3 walk-off come-from-behind win over Fox Township.
Just after 10 a.m. on Friday morning, the tennis courts at Benzinger Park came alive with the sounds of rollerblades racing up and down the surface, sticks hitting against each other as players fought for the ball, and that ball bouncing off the post of one of the nets as a player took a shot on goal. The excitement was all part of Benzinger Park's youth hockey league, which is a new activity at the facility this year.
The city approved funding for a new demolition project of two blighted structures, a house at 213 N. Michael St. and the Grange building at 219 N. Michael St.
Funding for the project, in the amount of $9,500, is being utilized from the city's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, which is federal grant funding.
Ann Bolden, owner of Bold Looks and Bolden Apartments, has purchased the structures situated next to her business with plans to demolish them leaving one site vacant which she plans to utilize as parking and constructing a duplex on the other lot.
KERSEY â€“ A large crowd came out to support the Smoke on the Mountain BBQ cook-off held over the weekend at the Fox Township Volunteer Fire Department in Kersey.
The cook-off began at 11 a.m. and Saturday afternoon featured a talent show featuring local youth.
In the 16-and-over age group, Jake Burns took first place.
In the 10-15-year-old age group, Lexi Catalone took first place, Jacob Mosier took second place, and Abby Mosier and Lainee Swanson tied for third place.
Members of Crystal Fire Department, St. Marys Ambulance, St. Marys Police and fire police responded Sunday evening to a one-vehicle crash on Bucktail Road. Unconfirmed reports indicate a vehicle was traveling westbound toward St. Marys before reportedly running off the roadway and into a ditch. The call came in shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday. The accident happened near Vollmer Road.
JAMES CITY â€“ Nearly 100 people attended Saturdayâ€™s â€śHighland Township residents fight for clean water picnic,â€ť according to one of the event organizers, Marsha Buhl.
Buhl, a James City resident and member of an organization entitled â€śHighland Township Citizens Advocating a Clean Healthy Environmentâ€ť (CACHE), collected the names and addresses of most of those in attendance throughout the four hour event held at the fire hall in James City.
