Â ECC head coach Fr. Eric Vogt notched his 100th win on Thursday evening as the Crusaders kept their undefeated season alive, walking off 10-0 in five innings against the Carmichaels Mighty Mikes in a PIAA Class A quarterfinal contest played at Jack Critchfield Park at Slippery Rock University.
The Springfield Delco Cougars ended the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team's season Thursday afternoon at Jan M. Hutchinson Field at Bloomsburg University by a 7-0 score in the quarterfinal round of the PIAA Class AAA tournament.
Members of the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors continued discussion on the next step to take on their search for a new superintendent during their Thursday evening workshop.
Board member Pat Rezmerski introduced a motion to list Josh Williams on the agenda for the board's Monday regular meeting to be hired as superintendent.
Business Manager Cindy Fingado stated Rezmerski's request was not possible because when electing a superintendent there are certain publication requirements in which a notice must be published five days in advance.
Several residents, City Council members and teachers were in attendance to show their support for the promotion of Josh Williams, current St. Marys Area High School principal, to superintendent during Thursday evening's St. Marys Area School District school board workshop.
Thomas Burdick voiced his disappointment in the school board for not hiring Williams as superintendent.
"As the remaining candidate for the job it all makes perfect sense to immediately take steps to secure Dr. Josh Williams as the superintendent for the St. Marys Area School District," Burdick said.
Firefighters, auxiliary members and area residents have been chipping in to clean up the Ridgway Firemen's Carnival Grounds following the May 21 flood that ravaged the area.
Water line stains on some of the structures at the grounds shows that the floodwaters were at least three to four feet high in some areas.
"You can just imagine how bad it was with the water line that high, everything was just flooded," said Keith Mader Jr., president of the Ridgway Fire Department.
Freda Alice (Thacher) Shutters, â€śAliceâ€ť to most, died Sunday, June 1, 2014.
She was born on March 20, 1937 to the late Freida and John Thacher in Millstone Township, Elk County, in Pennsylvania.
She graduated from Ridgway High School. Alice wed Alvin Shutters Sr. on Sept. 12, 1959. She worked at Stackpole Corporation for many years, and later for BiLo grocery store.
Helen A. Predko, 92, formerly of 1028 North Broad St., Ridgway, died Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born Oct. 9, 1921 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Peter and Mary (Stowick) Yando. She married Joseph Predko on Feb. 9, 1944, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 1992. She resided in Ridgway all her life and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church.
Goldie "Malamati" (nee Kalambukas) Gioulekas, 92, died Monday, June 2, 2014.
She was the beloved wife of the late Constantinos Gioulekas; loving mother of Vickie Gioulekas, Klee (Patricia) Gioulekas, Anna (Markos) Bahas and Markos Gioulekas; cherished grandmother of Constantinos, Olympia, Rosanna (Raymond) Kollidas, Malamati, Leontios, Constantina, Christian, Constandina and Anna; adored great-grandmother of Petros, Markos, Tasos and Leontios Kollidas; dearest sister of the late Andrew (late Colleen) Kalambukas; also survived by nieces and nephews.
