Margie E. Liptak, 93, died Thursday, June 26, 2014 at Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown after a lengthy illness.
She was bornÂ in Walston, Jefferson County on March 16, 1921 to Steve and Anna (Fairman) Farcus.
Upon graduating from Saints Cosmas and Damian High School in Punxsutawney, Margie worked in the grocery business eventually becoming manager of stores in Punxsutawney and St. Marys. Later she joined Pure Carbon in St. Marys where she worked until retirement in 1991.
RIDGWAY â€“ The trial for Brandon Michael Weidow, 26, of Byrnedale, reconvened Wednesday morning at the Elk County Courthouse.
Weidow is charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence for his alleged involvement in the crash that killed Savannah Straub in July 2012. In Tuesday's opening remarks, both attorneys advised that the key question in the case is whether Weidow was driving the vehicle on the night of the crash.
During the May flooding incident that plagued much of Elk County, the St. Marys Crystal Fire Department responded to a total of 76 incidents of cellar pumps.
The incidents ranged from homes with a few inches of water in their basements to those with basements will water up to their ceiling rafters.
Many of those homes were on Fourth and Depot streets with a few on North Michael Street.
As a member of the CFD, Greg Gebauer provided this information to his fellow city council members during their regular June meeting. Councilman Ned Jacob is also a member of the CFD.
Memorial Park is offering individuals of all ages a way to dance away the afternoons while also getting a good workout in this summer. Tuesday marked the first day of Mumba, which is the park staff's version of the popular dance-fitness program Zumba. Mumba is currently being held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2-3 p.m. at the park's tennis courts and is free of charge.
Memorial Park staff member Anna Hoffman came up with the idea for Mumba, and fellow staff member Erin Gahn serves as the instructor.
Frances Ann â€śPamâ€ť Yeager, 85, of 155 Russ Lane, St. Marys, died unexpectedly Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at the Penn Highlands Elk.
She was born Sept. 7, 1928 in Kersey, daughter of the late Francis and Veronica Steinlehner Pontzer. On Sept. 20, 1952 in the Sacred Heart Church, she married Gilbert F. â€śGibâ€ť Yeager, who preceded her in death on Feb. 20, 2013.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys Public High School. She was a retired employee of the former Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1989.
RIDGWAY â€“ A jury trial began Tuesday for Brandon Michael Weidow, 26, of Byrnedale, who is charged in a 2012 vehicle accident that resulted in the death of Savannah Straub.
Weidow is facing felony charges of homicide by vehicle and homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, as well as several DUI and traffic offenses, according to court records.
On Tuesday the new Benedictine Gift Shop, located inside the St. Mary's Parish annex building, is opening its doors to the community.
"The store will continue to serve as an honor to our Benedictine Sisters while providing additional products that are produced by other Benedictine communities," explained Fr. Thomas More Sikora, O.S.B. of St. Mary's Parish.
Glenwood Beer Distributors, a wholesale distributor out of Erie, will soon be opening their doors in Ridgway. Construction of the facility is still in the early stages however.
"It's going well, all the rain down there is kind of slowing things down at times," said Mike Green, one of Glenwood's owners. "We've run into a couple hiccups, but everything is on point."
The St. Marys Little League Baseball Major League all star squad (11-12-year-olds) opened play in the District 10 tournament Monday evening at Memorial Park with a 22-9 victory over the DuBois squad.
The St. Marys American Legion Post 103 team hosted Wilcox for a doubleheader on Monday at Berwind Park, with the teams splitting the victories. St. Marys won the first game in a 12-0 shutout while Wilcox claimed an 11-6 victory in the second game.
