Storytime in the Park returns with Dr. Seuss works

The upcoming Storytime in the Park offers the best of both worlds for families who enjoy reading and the outdoors.
Dickinson Center, Inc. (DCI) is sponsoring the event taking place Friday, June 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Benzinger Park in St. Marys. In case of inclement weather a rain date is set for June 13.
"Our goal is to help promote literacy and bring attention to all four areas of early learning development in kids in the area," said Nicky Cashmer, DCI Parents as Teachers (PAT) Educator and event coordinator.

Connecting WIC to the workforce

In celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first Women, Infants and Children [WIC] program in Pennsylvania, local officials in Ridgway on Wednesday highlighted their own initiative during a meeting of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission's executive board.
"WIC is a critical component of who we are and what we do as a regional organization," said Eric Bridges, executive director at North Central.

County's Historical Society celebrates 50 years

RIDGWAY – The Elk County Historical Society will be celebrating its 50th anniversary with a summer celebration to be held on Saturday, May 31.
The day will begin at 11 a.m. with a presentation on the history of the society from its beginnings in 1964 at the first unofficial meeting at the Ridgway YMCA to its present-day locale along Center Street.

Shirley Nachtway Krieg, 84 of Naples, Fla., died on May 22, 2014.
Born in St. Marys to the late Fred and Fidelis (Hoehn) Nachtway, Shirley was a proud graduate of St. Marys Catholic Central High School in 1947.
She was a longtime member of St. Mark Catholic Church of Emporium, and St. Leo’s Catholic Church of Bonita Springs, Fla.
Shirley was also a florist and office manager, but her most cherished role was being a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Lady Dutch capture District 9-AAA championship over Punxsy

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch successfully defended their District 9 Class AAA championship Tuesday afternoon at Brockway High School by defeating the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks by an 9-0 score.

Crusaders edge DCC 4-3 in eight innings to advance to title game

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team waited until the last moment Tuesday afternoon to tie the game with DuBois Central at 3-all in the bottom of the seventh inning, then got a single from Dan Singer to score Dan Stauffer in the eighth inning to send the Crusaders to the District 9-A championship game with a 4-3 victory.

Dutch miscues allow Chucks to walk off with D9 title

Headed into the bottom of the seventh inning with a 4-1 lead, St. Marys Area looked set to pull off an upset of top seeded Punxsutawney to claim the D9 Class AAA baseball title. The Chucks had other plans though and took advantage of a few miscues to tie the game and send it into extra innings. From there, the Dutchmen tried again to seal the victory as they pulled ahead 5-4 in the top of the ninth, only to see the Chucks come right back and walk off for the 6-5 win in the bottom of the inning.

State leaders assess flood damage

RIDGWAY – Lieutenant Governor Jim Cawley, Pa. Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson) and state Representative Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) were in town Tuesday morning and into the early afternoon to assess the flood damage that ravaged Ridgway last week.
Ridgway Borough Manager Kim Zimmerman and Ray Imhof, emergency coordinator for both Ridgway Borough and Township, and assistant fire chief, spoke Tuesday morning of the severity of the disaster during an emergency briefing downtown.

ECCHS seniors look to future success

Valedictorian Anna VanEerden and Salutatorian Kennedy Weisner left their Elk County Catholic High School Class of 2014 classmates with encouraging sentiments and thoughtful memories during the school's commencement ceremony on Sunday afternoon.
VanEerden described the seniors as a class made of bright, dynamic, inspiring individuals who through "creating memories and sharing experiences has changed us all for the better."
