Tom Corbett, NBC projected, Pennsylvania Democratic businessman Tom Wolf has unseated the state’s Republican governor. 65-year-old Wolf, poured his personal fortune into the race and hammered the governor over declining education spending. Corbett, also 65 and a blunt former prosecutor, trailed Wolf badly in most pre-election polls.

Council puts the brakes to free holiday parking

Free holiday parking was not on City Council's Christmas list this year.
On Monday evening St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce Outreach Coordinator Ashley O'Dell requested free holiday parking throughout downtown beginning on Friday, Nov. 28 through Wednesday, Dec. 24 as well as during Light Up Night on Friday, Nov. 21 from 5-8 p.m., however council voted down a motion on the issue.
Council members Greg Gebauer and Sally Geyer were the lone two voters approving parking for the entire holiday season.

Grant received for backup radio system

The St. Marys Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Committee received a $10,500 grant from Seneca Resources to fund a new backup radio system. A motion to accept the grant was unanimously approved.
The overall cost of the system is $10,731.85, the remainder of which will be covered by the city's budget. The grant was secured through the assistance of St. Marys Community and Economic Development Coordinator Tina Gradizzi.

Mersen fire causes $350,000 in damages

ST. MARYS – A tractor-trailer docked at the Mersen USA building in St. Marys caught fire around noon on Monday, a blaze that caused an estimated $350,000 in damages to the truck and Mersen building.

QUEHANNA – It is not uncommon for those drawn for an elk license to bring their teenage children along to share in the experience. It was the other way around on Monday though for 14-year-old Travis Raab of Hammondsport, N.Y. Raab was one of the 27 individuals selected for an antlered elk license in this year's hunt and he got to share in the experience with his father, Kelly.
"We've been applying for a license for three years," Raab said. "We had actually just gotten back from vacation on my birthday and we got the message on the phone."

Northern tier PILT funds questioned

RIDGWAY – County officials throughout the region are beginning to question tax payments from state government on public lands within the area, including Elk County.
A State Land Tax Fairness Coalition meeting was held last week, attended by roughly 40 people, including various county commissioners.
The coalition is looking for an increase on payment in lieu of taxes [PILOT-- also know as PILT] to go to school districts, counties and municipalities for state-owned lands.

Tractor-trailer fire at Mersen

ST. MARYS – A tractor-trailer truck caught fire Monday afternoon at Mersen USA in St. Marys. The vehicle was destroyed in the blaze and the building’s loading dock was damaged.
