Dolores H. Sorg

July 20, 2014

Dolores H. Sorg, 69, of 406 Maple Ave., Ridgway, died Saturday, July 19, 2014.
She was born on Jan. 17, 1945, in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Alfred and Mary Donovan Ehrensberger.
On Aug. 25, 1973, in Queen of the World Church, she married Henry W. Sorg, who preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 2000.

St. Marys Giant Eagle closing its doors

ST. MARYS – The Giant Eagle store located along South St. Marys Street will be closing its doors for good on Aug. 23 of this year.
The store celebrated its grand opening in 2010 and the close will affect 59 employees who could be considered for open positions at other store locations.

Months of investigation pay off

RIDGWAY – At approximately 10 a.m. on July 17, Ridgway Borough Police executed a search warrant at 312 Chestnut St., Ridgway, the residence of Rachel Shrefler and Tammy J. Zawatski.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, the North Central Regional Drug Task Force had accumulated substantial information about the sale and distribution of A-PVP (bath salts) at the above address.

SR 120 intersection open

The intersection at state Route 120 and South St. Marys Street was recently reopened. The intersection at Vine Road has since been re-closed as construction crews are working on the northbound lane.

Scott L. Bauer

Scott L. Bauer, 28, of Kaul Avenue, St. Marys, died unexpectedly Friday, July 18, 2014 at the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born April 24, 1986 in St. Marys, son of Blaze L. Bauer of St. Marys and Diane Laughlin Shuttleworth of St. Marys.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys Parochial and public schools. He was a former employee of Penn Pallet and the Buehler Lumber Company.
He was a member of Queen of the World Church, was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed spending time with his son and family.

Drug busts yield 4 suspects, bath salts, currency

Four individuals were taken into custody on Thursday as a result of a dual drug bust in St. Marys and Ridgway.
Approximately 80 grams of bath salts and in excess of $30,000 in cash were seized in Ridgway with approximately 50 grams of bath salts and $6,000 in cash seized in St. Marys.
Multiple law enforcement agencies worked together in executing the search warrants served at 312 Chestnut Ave. in Ridgway Borough shortly after 9:30 a.m. and at 325 Kaul Ave. in St. Marys shortly before noon due to coordination efforts.

Jury: Pisani guilty on all counts

RIDGWAY – After approximately three hours of deliberation Thursday, the jury returned a verdict in the trial of Edward J. Pisani, 59, of Johnsonburg.
Pisani was found guilty of possession with intent to manufacture or distribute a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. According to the charges, approximately 30 marijuana plants, five pounds of marijuana and numerous items of paraphernalia were found at Pisani's house during the execution of a search warrant on Sept. 6, 2012.

Wing Fling tickets on sale

Those looking to enjoy a night of wings and entertainment can still purchase tickets for the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce's 13th annual Wing Fling slated for Friday, Aug. 8 on Market Street.
Vendor space is also still available for the event taking place from 6-10 p.m.
Ticket price includes a dozen wings, a T-shirt, which must be worn to gain admittance to the event, and a plastic beverage stein provided by event sponsor Farmers National Bank.

AP source: Missile took down jet in Ukraine

WASHINGTON (AP) — American intelligence authorities believe a surface-to-air missile took down a passenger jet in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, a U.S. official said, but the Obama administration was still scrambling to confirm who launched the strike and whether there were American citizens killed in the crash.

Vice President Joe Biden said the incident was "not an accident" and described the Malaysia Airlines plane as having been "blown out of the sky."

Benedictine Gift Shop celebrates grand opening

The new Benedictine Gift Shop celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday afternoon. The shop is located at the St. Mary's Parish annex building at the bottom of Church Street.
"From the Sisters beginning in town was to teach and spread prayer and devotion in the church, and that applies not only to the Catholic church, but to all Christians in the area. With that important role that they started, we at St. Mary's Parish, consider that important enough to make sure it stays here and is carried on," said Fr. Thomas More Sikora, O.S.B., St. Mary's Parish pastor.
