Christmas Day Dinner marks 20 years

Food, fun and friendship is what the annual Christmas Day Dinner has been providing to St. Marys area residents for the past 20 years.
Each year the community mission project has grown in popularity. Last year 223 meals were served in the dining hall while another 225 meals were delivered to area residents.
The free event is open to all residents of St. Marys, Fox Township and Jay Township. Meals are served beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Christmas Day at the First United Methodist Church's Asbury Hall, located along North St. Marys Street.

Benezette man charged in jewelry theft

JAY TWP. – A Benezette resident has been charged with the theft of various pieces of jewelry, including items of sentimental value to Denise Lorraine Bahl, 55, of Force.
Robert Joseph Wehner, 46, of Benezette was charged with theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property when another acquaintance, Earnest Caldarelli, searched Wehner's belongings and found him to be in possession of Bahl's jewelry as well as jewelry belonging to Caldarelli. Wehner reportedly told police that he wasn't present when they went through his suitcase and doesn't know where the jewelry came from.

Charles "Huxie" W. Nearing

Charles "Huxie" W. Nearing, 77, of Burning Well Road, Wilcox, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014 at Penn Highlands DuBois.
Born Aug. 5, 1937, in Wilcox, he was a son of the late Linus and Margaret Paulina Nearing.
"Huxie" served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Veterans' Memorial Club in Mt. Jewett and the Wilcox Sportsman's Club.
Prior to retirement, he was employed as the dog catcher for Elk County.

Theresa Marie Pond

Theresa Marie Pond, 82, of Fayetteville, N.C, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014 in Kingswood Nursing Center in Aberdeen, N.C.
Theresa was born in Elk County on Oct. 10, 1932 to the late Frank and Johanna Weber Eichmiller. She worked as a bookkeeper in the automobile industry.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen P. West and her husband, Marvin of Fayetteville, N.C.; a sister, Dorothy Anderson of Erie; one grandchild, Sgt. Michael Eugene West of Ft. Campbell, Ky.; and one great-grandchild, Katie Marie West of Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Margaret H. Casolo

Margaret H. Casolo, 95, of 410 N. Broad St. in Ridgway, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014 at Pinecrest Manor.
She was born Oct. 6, 1919 in Bordell, daughter of the late John and Louis Abbott Hooper.
She married Michael Casolo on Jan. 9, 1960, he survives.
Margaret Casolo was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, and she had been employed as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone in Bradford, and as a sales clerk for G.C. Murphy's in Ridgway. She enjoyed sewing and gardening.

Mary Rose Eckert

Mary Rose Eckert, 92, of Erie, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014 at St. Mary’s East.
She was born June 4, 1922 in Kersey, daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Malone Sennett.
Rose was a 1940 graduate of Kersey High School.
She was an active member of St. Jude the Apostle Church, was a wonderful homemaker, and loved baking. Rose had a great sense of humor, enjoyed traveling, and loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Crusaders defeat DuBois Central Catholic 64-54 Saturday

The Elk County Catholic Crusader basketball team picked up another victory Saturday evening as they defeated the visiting DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals by a 10-point margin, 64-54, at the ECCHS gymnasium.

SMA gymnasts win third straight, defeat DuBois Saturday

The St. Marys Area gymnastics squad won their third meet of the season Saturday afternoon as they defeated the DuBois Area Lady Beaver squad by a 119.55 to 114.75 score.

DECA students take home top honors at districts

Recently, 44 St. Marys Area High School students advanced to the state DECA competition after taking home top spots in the organization's District 1 competition.
Last week, SMAHS played host to the district competition held at the Fine Line in St. Marys where 198 students competed from McDowell High School, Venango County Vo-Tech, Bradford Area High School and SMAHS.
Students are now busy preparing for the state competition taking place Feb. 24-26 at the Hershey Lodge.
