Senior Jake Fritz scored twice in less than a minute midway through the second half Tuesday to give St. Marys a 3-1 rain-drenched win at Kane in boys soccer.
A proposal to utilize the St. Marys City Hall basement as an Emergency Operation Center (EOC) on an as needed basis was proposed Monday evening to members of City Council.
The proposal was part of an update on the city's Emergency Management (EMA) Committee provided by EMA Director John Feldbauer.
Establishing an EOC was one of the first things the committee decided the city needs.
"We wanted to make sure we can deal with it here, within the city of St. Marys, and not rely on outside agencies for help," Feldbauer said.
RIDGWAY â€“ Ridgway Borough is benefitting from the disbursement of Act 13 Marcellus Shale impact fees to offset costs associated with the May 21 flooding disaster that ravaged the town.
Borough Manager Kim Zimmerman on Tuesday morning accepted a check from the Elk County Board of Commissioners for $28,721.84 to cover the costs of rolloff dumpsters provided for the residents by the borough.
RIDGWAY â€“ Edward J. Pisani, 59, of Johnsonburg, was sentenced Tuesday to 12 to 24 months in Elk County Prison and three years of probation for convictions of possession with intent to manufacture/distribute a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
"There was never any sale or intent to sell," Pisani said. "I smoke it."
The charges were filed after a September 2012 search warrant was executed at Pisani's home. Police found approximately 30 marijuana plants, five pounds of marijuana and numerous items of drug paraphernalia.
Clifford D. Singer, 56, of 36 Singer Lane, Emporium, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Oct. 7 morning.
He was born June 22, 1958 in St. Marys, a son of Celine Gerber Singer and the late George J. Singer of St. Marys.
Cliff was an avid outdoorsman. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #368, Emporium, the Miller-Raffaele Post 6221, VFW and the Knights of Columbus Christabelle Club.
While city government officials are in the midst of reviewing contract negotiations with Zito Media, the company's president, Jim Rigas, presented an update of services Monday night to members of St. Marys City Council.
Among the prevalent changes completed since Rigas' last update to council in March 2012 were a bandwidth upgrade, two-way activation, high speed data and voice capability, and high definition and DVR. The regional fiber network was also expanded.
"Over $2.3 million of capital has been invested in the system since Zito Media's acquisition about 5-6 years ago," Rigas said.
BENEZETTE â€“Â Despite the gloomy weather and increasing threat of rain late Monday afternoon, a group of over a dozen individuals could be seen gathered at one of the viewing areas located at the end of one of the walking trails at the Elk Country Visitor Center around 4:30 p.m. A few cow elk were out in the field adjacent to the center, and the location where they had decided to graze put them in close enough proximity to the viewing area that visitors gathered there to take a few photos.
The experience may be common enough now, but only a handful of years ago it was not even possible.
RIDGWAY â€“ Dayon D. McCracken, 23, of Reading, was scheduled for jury selection on Monday, Oct. 13 for his alleged involvement in an assault and kidnapping that was reported in April.
He is charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, terroristic threats, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, simple assault and harassment.
Nancy C. Dinsmore, 75, of 400 Main St., Kersey, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014 at her home followed by a brief illness.
She was born Jan. 20, 1939, a daughter of the late Harold and Doris Goodreau Sherry.
On July 5, 1958 in St. Bonaventure in Olean, N.Y., she married Charles Dinsmore, who preceded her in death May 2, 1982.
Elk County Catholic senior Mitchell Struble finished as the District 9 Class AA boys' golf runner-up on Saturday following a four-hole playoff against Ridgway's Josh Roselli at the Punxsutawney Country Club in Punxsutawney.
