Visitor center continues to improve elk viewing experience

BENEZETTE – Despite the gloomy weather and increasing threat of rain late Monday afternoon, a group of over a dozen individuals could be seen gathered at one of the viewing areas located at the end of one of the walking trails at the Elk Country Visitor Center around 4:30 p.m. A few cow elk were out in the field adjacent to the center, and the location where they had decided to graze put them in close enough proximity to the viewing area that visitors gathered there to take a few photos.
The experience may be common enough now, but only a handful of years ago it was not even possible.

McCracken scheduled for jury selection in kidnap case

RIDGWAY – Dayon D. McCracken, 23, of Reading, was scheduled for jury selection on Monday, Oct. 13 for his alleged involvement in an assault and kidnapping that was reported in April.
He is charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, terroristic threats, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, simple assault and harassment.

Nancy C. Dinsmore

Nancy C. Dinsmore, 75, of 400 Main St., Kersey, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014 at her home followed by a brief illness.
She was born Jan. 20, 1939, a daughter of the late Harold and Doris Goodreau Sherry.
On July 5, 1958 in St. Bonaventure in Olean, N.Y., she married Charles Dinsmore, who preceded her in death May 2, 1982.

Struble finishes as D9-AA runner-up

Elk County Catholic senior Mitchell Struble finished as the District 9 Class AA boys' golf runner-up on Saturday following a four-hole playoff against Ridgway's Josh Roselli at the Punxsutawney Country Club in Punxsutawney.

Dutchmen edge Punxsutawney Chucks 1-0 Saturday

It was a chilly and windy fall morning on Saturday, but it turned out to be a good day for soccer for the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen as they avenged their loss to Punxsutawney earlier this season with a 1-0 win over the Chucks in a match played at the SMAHS soccer field.
The two teams met for the first time this season on Tuesday, Sept. 23 in Punxsutawney, and the Chucks won that match 3-2.

Dippold wins girls' race at Ridgway Invite, two Crusaders place

The Elk County Catholic cross country squads put in strong performances at the Ridgway Invitational which was held at the Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School on Saturday. The Lady Crusaders placed fifth out of nine teams while the Crusaders came in third out of 14 teams. Lady Crusader Tori Dippold dominated the girls' race, finishing over a minute faster than her closest competitor. She had a winning time of 18:53.4.

Lady Dutch have three place at Ridgway Invitational

The St. Marys Area cross country runners took part in the Ridgway Invitational on Saturday at the Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway. The Lady Dutch finished second among nine girls' teams and also had three team members place in the top eight.

Pro-life speaker at Sacred Heart

Georgette Forney, of Pittsburgh, president of Anglicans for Life and co-founder of Silent No More awareness campaign, spoke at Sacred Heart Church Sunday night about the negative effects of abortion, including testimony of her own experience.
"I had an abortion when I was 16 years old, and I spent the next 19 years pretending that I hadn't," she said. "My daughter should be 37 years old, but she's not."

Dutchmen roll to 50-18 win over Clarion-Limestone

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen defeated the Clarion-Limestone Lions by a 50-18 score in a KSAC game played at Clarion-Limestone last night.

Ridgway rout ruins ECC Homecoming

Both the Elk County Catholic Crusaders and the Ridgway Elkers took 5-0 records into Friday night's game at Dutch Country Stadium, but it was the Elkers who would steal the show, outplaying the Crusaders on both sides of the ball to win 35-7 in a dominating performance.
